Hey I'm going to college in the fall and I'm worried about the mailing system. I often order books, DVDs, etc from ebay or Amazon and the packages obviously don't fit in the P.O. boxes. Are you allowed to receive such packages? And is it a hassle to go and pick up all the mail, because they don't come straight to your dorm...

The college I'm going to attend leaves the bigger things in the room behind the mailbox wall and I guess they put something in your mailbox saying you have a large package waiting.

The mailboxes are also right by the enterance to the building, so it wouldn't be a hassle for me. It really depends on where you go.

Okay, I see. Thanks!

yeah my college holds all packages in a central mail room and sends you a note saying its arrived. You then go, sign for it, and pick it up.

My college mailing address had a box number on the end. It wasn't a PO box, it was just my college mailroom box. Still, some companies wouldn't accept it. In these cases, I just left the box number off of my address. Unfortunately, this created a bit of extra work for mailroom staff, as they had to look up my box number from my name (in order to leave me a mail-slip saying that I had a package waiting), but things always got to me just fine.

I did go to a small school, so this may have been easier for me than it would be for students elsewhere, but I don't know.

Other schools handle packages differently. Sometimes, delivery is by dorm. Sometimes, all packages go to a package room and a list of recipients gets posted nearby. Don't worry about it for now. The important point is that you should be just fine :)

ETA: It's not a hassle to pick up mail. I don't really know why, but picking up mail will likely become the highlight of your life...especially if you actually get any!

You do not need a P.O. Box. Each college dorm has a mailing room. You can pick up your packages there. Where I attended school, there will be a packaging slip in your mailbox that alerts you when to pick up your oversized packages. Sometimes you could leave outgoing mail for delivery at the dorm.

Thanks to all of you, you guys rock! :)
