Has anyone been notified yet of their scholars program assignment? Accordint to the page for invited students, we were supposed to receive a letter no later than today. I haven't heard anything yet.

was at school today for open house. They gave us the scholars assignments since we were there. The info was provided to Admissions today and is being mailed out. They said 97 percent got their first or second choice.

Thanks for the info. Did you get the impression that they were just mailing them out today?

they were a little unclear. it sounded like they dropped off at admissions today. Probably mail out monday. Try calling admissions or scholars on monday.

If you call the scholars office on Monday, they most likely will tell you over the phone what program was assigned.

I was there w my D on Friday as well, and had the impression letters would go out via USPS Friday, or possibly Monday. I was glad for my D that they told her during the info session Friday, and she got her 1st choice.

Astrophysics mom, did you have a child go thru the scholars program?

Yes, D2 is a sophomore in the Environment, Technology, and Economy (ETE) program and has really loved the program. She was a Scholars “Ambassador” and worked at the Scholars table at several prospective student sessions.

Thanks to those who are in the loop for letting us know what’s going on. It would have been nice if someone from the Scholars program had emailed everyone who was expecting to have a letter delivered to their home no later than April 8th, if at least just to say they were going to be late. So far, there were three separate important notifications I’ve waited for from UM, and all three were late. I’m starting to wonder if I’m making a bad decision by choosing this school.

Sometimes the bureaucracy is a PITA, but UMD’s been worth it for my 2 Terps. Hang in there, Janet!

haha, thanks. I will :)

UMDCP is hard to deal with at times. It is purely based on the size.

However, as frustrated as our DS has been over the past 3 yrs. at times, I know he doesn’t regret the decision. He just accepts this is part of attending a school this large. Again, you will scream, but it is no different than how you would feel if they went to PSU, UNCCH, or UMiami. They are all big.

Being big has great things like more options for majors, socialization, athletics, etc and bad things like you are a number, and it can feel that way when you deal with the administration.

You have to accept which is more important, and IMPO deal with it.

When your child shows up and is placed in that scholars dorm, all of your fears/frustration will dissipate. You will see that one beauty of scholars is their academic advisors know them. They are not a number compared to general admit. They also work the dorms in a way to try to keep specific scholars programs together. In other words when our DS entered in 08, Govt Scholars were in Centreville South. Not on the same floor, but on the same side of Centreville.

I also was there this past Friday and cracked a smile while I saw the tours being given. DS told me, yeah, UMDCP sent out an email alert to all of the students to do them proud…hint, be cognizant on your behavior.

The worst part IMPO of UMDCP are the dorms. However, that is from a parental perspective OOS. Sorry when you are spending 35K a yr, and your DH went there in 88, and he states the dorm is the same, including no AC, you have to ask why 35K ?

Than again as a parent, I also get it, because kids can suffer with room fans, and you get a higher caliber student when you have better academic facilities that are recently built.

It is an issue of how you perceive things. The new journalism complex is amazing, out the door amazing, and I am sure that will increase the caliber or students who want journalism, in turn, making the school’s ranking increase, thus better opportunities for careers or grad school. In turn increases the school’s ranking.

OBTW, I have no bone in the fight regarding ranking, DS is AFROTC, he will be commissioned into the AF 2012 as an officer. However, I guess it does play into the system because he is AF scholarship and that means higher AF candidates will apply.

bulletandpima-I agree with a lot of what you said, but deadlines are deadlines, and we, as invited scholars, met all of them. Honestly, I bet most people invited to scholars take deadlines pretty seriously and expect others to do the same. Just my two cents!

Still no letter btw.

Anyone get theirs yet?

My son and his girlfriend are both waiting to see if they were accepted to their first choice programs - no word yet for either of them…

If I recall correctly, and this is going back to 2008, they did not get informed of which scholars program until they signed up for orientation. I do not recall if they had stated that announcements would be made prior.

I know you want to start planning for your future, but if you intend on attending not knowing really will have no impact on you because at orientation you sit down with an administrator and plot out your entire college career for classes that you need. It is not as if you can stomp your feet and force them to take you into that program. DS was told at orientation Govt was their no.1 program, and that they had a waiting list. They stated you drop out of it, don’t expect to get back in. I believe they stated International Relations was no. 2…reason why IMPO, that is probably people on the Govt waitlist.

It also makes no impact on dorms, since you will live in Cambridge. All it does is create the sense of knowing for sure. Granted when you pay the amount you pay, especially OOS, you want to feel valued. However, I have to say the negative I have with UMDCP is that they always have their hands out for money, including donations, and yet treat people like cattle.

That is a true negative to me, but on a whole, it is just the little stick poking me and I can get passed it because all of the positives that our DS has experienced.

It will always be a trade off for any college, big or small, you just need to either accept the negatives and say the positives are worth it, or say it isn’t.

The Scholars program was great for our DS. He loved it. He had doors open for him that gen admits don’t get.

~~~ Living in a Scholars dorm creates a small community in the big community.
As a freshman one of the hardest issues in a school the size of MD is creating those friendships and finding your niche. The Scholars dorms and seminars for the program, plus many are in the same classes with you, creates the small school feel.
~~~ Internship

This allows them to get their foot in the door for their future career. DS did Govt., interned on the Hill and was recruited to work there over the summer (paid). Same with his other friends, even OOS students were given jobs back at home in their district offices. One of our DS’s friends has parlayed it from Cong. to Sen. and has done that since 2008.

~~~ Many have decided to go to grad school, and because of the Scholars citation plus internships they are very competitive for grad school.
As I stated it all comes down to the fact that a school this size is not the easiest to deal with, but you have to decide what is your make or break.
Good luck
PS remember it is only a citation. Yes, certain courses will be req., but for the very popular programs, it overlaps with the majors. In other words you may get International Relations, but you want to major in Govt., you can still do both.
“Again, you will scream, but it is no different than how you would feel if they went to PSU, UNCCH, or UMiami. They are all big.”
Not to be a tool or anything, but UMiami is not a big school. It only has 10,000 undergrad. It’s a big misconception.
I have stated before. Just call or email the office and ask them what program you are in. It really is not a big deal, and is a look-up on a computer screen for them, I believe. D2 knew about her assignment before she graduated from high school. They were late that year with sending materials too. She called and asked and since we’d already met the director, he was glad to talk to her and remembered who she was.
Regarding housing, I don’t think all the dorms in Cambridge have a/c…that would be the only difference, knowing if you needed to go buy a fan to bring to campus or not.
If you want to have contact with a student who is already a freshman or sophomore in the program you are in, let me know. D2 can probably get you contact info. (in her spare time between finishing the semester work and studying for finals )
Even if they have AC I would still suggest to bring fans. DS lived in New Leonardtown as a soph. and he did not bring a fan. He came to regret it because when they have AC UMDCP has control over it. They will convert from AC to heat when they decide to convert. That yr for DS they converted in mid-Oct, but it was very warm until Nov., so they were sweating since the AC was converted to heat.
They also had the same problem when spring sprung. The heat was not switched to AC, thus they only had to live with opening windows. They also had issues because in the mid-atlantic region we can have 80 degree days and the next day have 60 degrees. Pretty cold when they switched to AC and you have 2-3 days of rain and 60 degree weather.
Dorm with AC or no AC TAKE A FAN.
You also want to take it to move the air, the dorms can get a very nasty stench if the kids don’t have something to create cross ventilation.
My son and his girlfriend both got letters today - they both got their first choices (Science, Technology and Society) and we’re all really excited!!
I got my letter today as well and I got my first choice, Life Sciences!
Do you need to do anything other than the deadline on May 1 enrollment? I remember we received the scholarship assignment long time ago, but didn’t do anything so far.
