College Park Scholars (v Honors College) Info/Discussion

@a20171 - If you are commuting, then you wouldn’t have to live in a dorm.

bumping up this discussion - best to start reading at my original post on page one to get a better understanding

Short answer is yes. D was invited to scholars but preferred honors. She made a call to admissions and it was done. Don’t know/remember if there was a deadline but I don’t recall it being a problem. Good luck.

What’s the difference between the Fire program, Scholars, and honors?

So are you saying only Honors are eligible for the B/K and only scholars are eligible for the presidential? Also, what is the average merit scholarship package given to people who aren’t in either?

Only Honors College admits are eligible for the B/K. Everyone (who applied Priority) is eligible for the Presidential and Dean’s Scholarships.

@SoofDad Could u answer my question above in post 23?

@SoofDad —hopefully you have not posted this before…

I assume that invitations to interview for B-K are somewhat rare? I read that there are 150 freshman B-K each fall, and I would guess that many multiples of that are invited and even more are admitted to Honors College.

@YoohooAddict - I don’t know anything about FIRE. Here are links to the Honors and Scholars web sites

It really tends to be a matter of fit. as seen by UMD. Both are GREAT Programs and offer a lot to the students who participate. Each one is composed of several unique programs that will challenge the students and provide opportunities to learn and grow.

@CT1417 - Approximately 400 students, from those admitted to Honors, are invited to interview for the B/K. About 250 get the Full Ride and all the others get a partial B/K, which I think is Full Tuition.

@SoofDad --WOW! That is a higher number than I would have guessed! Thank you!

@CT1417 - Those are 400 out of all the Admitted Honors students. Because of UMD’s historical yield of 33%, they admit 3 times the number of those who actually enroll.

@SoofDad --taking this a step further, do you know how many are admitted to Honors? Assume 3000, if one-third yield? So 400 of 3000 interview invitations extended?

@CT1417 - I’ve never be able to get a reliable number on that, but 3000 seems reasonable. Maybe a little less than that, but I don’t really know.

When does scholarship information come out?

I believe Scholarship info starts to come out mid-to-late February

I was admitted to the Honors College and I was trying to decide between University Honors and Gemstone. Does anyone have any advice based on their experience?

My D picked University Honors because it is more flexible. Gemstone was her second choice

This link will give more info on each program

@SoofDad I just checked on partial Banneker/Key awards. For OOS students they cover $12000 plus a book allowance. While generous, that is less than 1/2 tuition. Still, it’s a pretty great offer!

Hi I was admitted to Maryland Honors and am pretty psyched. I guess I thought at such a big school it would make it easier to meet people with similar goals and was hoping for scholarship $$ since I am OOS. I didn’t realize there was honors housing, that is pretty important to me, most cities in my state have fewer people than UMD, hah.
Also, being in engineering I want to get a lot out of my humanities courses. About how much of my non-engineering requirements can I do through honors?
