College Park Scholars

Cheapseats, if you can't do an overnight...I'm doing one next weekend w/ a scholars student and can fill ya' in.

yah, sure Eckie. Thanks! give me everything you got next week. :D

I wrote my essay for the Media program. I just described my interest related to that program and some of the courses I took in high school related to it. Hopefully I can get into Media because I wasn't thrilled about my other two choices, Earth,Life, and Time and American Cultures. The sheet said they only accept about 50% of applicants for some of the more popular programs, including Media.

As far as the partying thing goes, just the fact that a decent number of people have asked about the party scene in Scholars proves that its not just a bunch of study freaks. Hell, if the scene does suck and you're living in Cumberland (Media dorm, which I will be in if all goes well), hit me up and we'll make our own fun. :D

Harsh, everytime I see your name, I read it as "Holden Caulfield"

Well, I am a pure cynic, you phony.

How long is your essay? Mine is about a 1-1.5 pages double-spaced. Is that good or should it be longer?

Is everyones scholars program reflective of their major? I want to study poli sci, but I'm interested in international relations, but lack the foreign language skills to minor it in. So I think that Scholars would be a great way to learn more about international relations just because I really like it.

You can definitely choose a scholars program that is not reflective of your major if that's what you want. I would say that a lot of people choose a program that fits their major, but you do not have to. Just because you choose, for example, life sciences as your program, it doesn't mean that everything you will be doing throughout the time you are in scholars will be geared toward a career in science. I don't know if there are specific classes that each scholars program requires you to take, but what I think it is mainly is that whichever program you choose, you will be surrounded by people who share the same interests.

On our tour, the point was made that one of the advantages of scholars was to pick something totally not in your major so that you could expose yourself to other areas. Sounds good to me.

do u think that a black kid with a 3.7 UW and a 4.2 W and a 1950 SAt can get into CP scholars

Yes, but why? From all accounts, Scholars is pointless. Hence why I didn't do it. Just my opinion, though.

do you get any money from it?

It does not come with money, however, by nature, kids selected for it tend to have higher over all stats, and they are the ones that may be given money..............my d. was selected for scholars and received a good size scholarship. Whether they are connected or not-- who knows. Is it pointless?? Depends on the person. For her, it was a deciding factor to go to UMCP. She felt like it placed her in a smaller group within a large university. (which I think is the point of the whole program)
