College prep day schools in Philadelphia suburbs

My son is deciding between Malvern Prep, Devon Prep and Episcopal Academy for 9th grade next year. Commuting distance wise, all schools are same from home. Cost wise, Devon prep is $10k less. Strong academics is important. Since my son likes sports, that is important too. For reference, he is in west chester public school currently.

Any insights will be appreciated.

Thank you

While all three are very good schools, I would say that EA is known more for its academics compared to Devon and MP. Athletics-wise EA and MP are very strong depending on the sport. Which sports have his interest?

ETA: I’m sure you already know MP and DP are boys-only while EA is co-Ed if that makes a difference.

For academics, my choice would be Episcopal followed by Malvern
Prep then Devon Prep.

Thank you @Vertigo75 for your response.
He loves playing basketball since Pre-k. In middle school, he also likes to play football, lacrosse. I’d like him to try other sports as well in high school. Too early to tell if he will be going to college as an athlete. As a parent, strong academics is very important and for him to be challenged academically. Not sure if he is doing that in middle school.
Co-ed or all boys school is not important.

Academics-wise you can’t go wrong with EA. Do a search on each school’s college profile list or college acceptances and I think you’ll be pretty impressed with EA.

If you haven’t done so already, consider having him reach out to the BB coach. They would probably love to talk with him. EA and MP typically have pretty strong FB programs, EA usually does pretty well in lacrosse, too.

EA will require him to play a sport each season as a freshman - great way to learn a new sport!

EA tends to be known for squash, should this sport be of potential interest.

Does EA give merit based scholarships? Their tuition, like most of other private schools, runs in $40K. We may not qualify for need based aid.

I don’t believe they do. I believe it is all need-based, as well.
