College prep schools in Philadelphia area

Hi,
I’m considering Prep school for my son who will start high school in 2023. I’m not sure if I want to send him to boarding school. So, I’m mainly considering day schools in Philadelphia area. Which schools have good academics and sports programs (basketball)?

Thank you.

George School has excellent basketball.

And it’s an amazing place. May not be commutable depending on where you are, but could be worth considering as a not so far boarding school

Geographic considerations? Philadelphia area covers a lot of geography. The suggestion for Episcopal Academy is good, but might not be valid if you live in Bucks County

Penn Charter, Hill School (requires boarding for one year, sports not that great), Germantown Academy, Shipley, Haverford.

Malvern Prep and La Salle have good athletic programs (LAX and XC/Track, respectively), but I wouldn’t put them same academic category as the others.

If you had a daughter, I would suggest Baldwin… :joy: Awesome college placements. Cannot say enough good things about this school!

I am in West Chester. So, anything in 10 to 20 miles is desirable.

Thanks all for suggestions. A lot of choices. Are there any prep schools which are not a good value for money? For reference, ours is West Chester School District ( Rustin high school)

The Perkiomen School basketball program has done well. Solid placement for players in d1,l with strong academics, and saw they beat mt Zion (#4 in country)
Boarding not required

Westtown School is in West Chester. Very strong basketball program - top recruit in the country signed with Duke for next year.

They are also a K-12 school, in addition to boarding in the upper school. I don’t think they require a year of boarding for day students anymore.

Devon Prep is ranked very highly in basketball (PIAA district 1). Right behind Lower Merion…

Agree with previous poster - Episcopal Academy. It would be within your 10-20 mile distance. High level academics. They send many kids (several athletes) to Ivies, NESCAC, NEWMAC, Patriot League, and other high academic conference colleges every year. Worth checking out if a high academic college is a goal.
