College productions

Just wanted to remind all you high school juniors and seniors to make an effort to see a musical production at as many of your prospective schools as possible. I just came back from a weekend at Syracuse (see the Syracuse thread for my post on "Lucky Stiff".) It reminded me of my D's college search, and how helpful it was to actually SEE what the various schools were putting on the stage. Some were good, some not so much! It truly helped us to narrow down her list of choices.

Great advice, onstage. Last fall at this time, my D and I visited SU and saw their production of "Urinetown" and were deeply impressed. We've seen plays and musicals at other schools, as well, and as you pointed out, they provide prospective students with further insight into the programs, the kids and so on.

Nadine Malouf, who played Miss Pennywise in Urinetown, also had a lead role in Lucky Stiff (Rita La Porta). She is only a junior and really an outstanding talent -- I predict great things for her.

I want to echo Onstage's tremendous review of "Lucky Stiff" performing at Syracuse this fall. My d and I attended last weekend while we were visiting Syracuse's MT program.
Not only is the talent pool impressive in this cast of 10 young musical theater artists, but we were equally blown away by the professionalism of the production as a whole. My d had an opportunity to meet with faculty, view 2 dance classes and speak directly with a sophmore student for quite a lengthy tour and talk.
We met with one of the faculty who spent 1 hr. and 1/2 with my d and 2 other prospective students, giving program overview and very specific info and help with auditioning process both for SU and in general for colleges. These had to be the nicest faculty and students around.
However, the highlight of our visit was having lunch with Onstage's daughter who is a sophomore in the MT program. She is a bundle of talent, as well as a mature, poised young woman who deeply impressed us both. She spoke with my d and myself about her experiences with auditioning, school choices, and how she decided on her best-fit program. I can't say enough about her performance in "Lucky Stiff", having been the only sophomore girl cast in the show, her ablilities abound!
We are beginning this process as my d is a jr. I can't recommend strongly enough how helpful it is to visit programs, research and discover if the program is going to match your style, personality and talent pool peers.
Thanks to this forum and wonderful posters such as Onstage and her d, we are making some headway early on in this daunting process.

Mamalu -- thanks for your kind comments -- I'll pass them on to D!

I agree that seeing productions at schools would be very beneficial. Unfortunately, we only got to see two musicals during our campus visits....PSU and BOCO. My D, being an early graduate, had to apply in fall of her junior year and so normally I would have visited all her schools in junior year, the year prior to auditioning. But we only saw four of her 8 schools prior to auditions and then went to all 8 for campus auditions but many do not put on their shows to coincide with campus auditions. But if you can visit in junior year or at a time of your own choice, try to see a show.

I also agree that visiting with current students for conversations and/or overnights is very useful and that is one thing my D did get to do at most of her schools.

I'm wondering if we should be listing some musicals and dates at schools if we know them (some of us have kids in these schools, as well as in these shows, or else know of shows they are not in as well).

What a great idea --I have a number of students at different schools, and try to get to their productions whenever possible, so I like to know in advance when the shows are. I'm sure it would be helpful to others as well.

That is a great idea to list shows soozievt. I think it deserves its own thread!

Ops- sorry- it has its own thread- here! Long long day at 5 Drs office with mym om- recurring malignacy- brain freeze!
