College specifically geared towards music/entertainment business/management

I have looked through this forum and have found posts regarding universities/colleges that have a music business major or similar, but I am looking for a college that specializes in music business/management, etc.

I have almost completed my 'traditional' 4-year degree, majoring in literature and Spanish (originally planning to go to law school), but I realised about a year ago that I really want to work in the music industry. I specifically want to be a tour manager, but right now I'm looking for the best place to study music business.

I'm having trouble finding any outside reports or rankings online that could really give me an idea as to what the top schools in this area are. A friend of mine suggested Full Sail and I have another friend who really likes the Atlanta Institute of Music. Any other suggestions or advice?

Thank you!!!

Look at Belmont University. The Curb School of Music Business at Belmont is very strong.

I would also look into Drexel in Philadelphia. I understand they have a music business major as well as their own record label.

Best for Music Business---Marshall MBA program at USC. (and you dont know
how tough that was for a UCLA grad to say)

Although already stated, Belmont and USC. The USC Thornton School of Music has a very good undergrad degree in music business. Full Sail seems to be having some problems lately. Google "Full Sail sucks", I kid you not.

I will add this about Belmont however ... and I hope no one takes it the wrong way and I know nothing about you or your background. But keep in mind that while it has an outstanding music program and music business program, it is a Christian school and VERY strongly geared to Christian music. If that isn't your thing, you might not feel comfortable there.

Just something to keep in mind when it comes to where you will be spending four years of your life ...

NYU has the Clive Davis music business program at Tisch, and U Miami in FL has a music business program in their music school as well.

I know a recent NYU graduate in music business (is Clive Davis for undergrads only?--not sure)--she got a Master's this spring. She has been working for Columbia records for the last year while in school. I think they are an excellent place to do graduate work in music business; internship opportunities are spectacular.

This might be undergrad only...Don't know check it out:

Columbia College Chicago : Music Business

Also, since no one has mentioned it, Berklee College of Music has one of the best music business programs, as well as MP&E (production and engineering, though that major is VERY tough to get into) ... opportunities abound, connections and networking you can make out the wazoo, etc.

Not sure if poster is a musician who also wants to get into the business end of things ... from what I read the Clive Davis program at NYU, while outstanding, is very specifically NOT for performing musicians (that took if off my daughter's list immediately when she was looking at schools).

At Berklee, however, all students must have a declared performance instrument in addition to whatever their major is.

Music business is also offered at NYU through their department of music (Steinhardt). You get a BM degree and do a concentration in music as well as a curriculum in business from Stern/ Steinhardt. As a music student you will take theory and compostion classes. Not sure of the exact performance/lesson availablility, but I think they exist.

uskoolfish has the program I was referring to--it's a graduate program. Clive Davis is undergraduate I believe. These two programs have always had the reputation for having amazing industry connections.

The music business program at NYU Steinhardt is definitley undergraduate and graduate. We met with the head of the department in the spring of D's junior year at HS. NYU Steinhardt has an excellent program for high school juniors to meet with department chairs over lunch. I think it is called Junior Connection.

The Clive Davis program is also undergrad. If you search on NYU's website they tell the difference between the 2 programs.

^^^Here is the link I was referring to for "Steinhardt Connections": Steinhardt Connection - Undergraduate Admissions - NYU Steinhardt

It was an excellent way to hear about the program and meet all the department heads. There were very few people at our session and D was able to ask a lot of questions and then meet with both the heads of music business and vocal performance informally.

FULL SAIL in Orlando, FL was named by rolling stone magazine in teh top 5 music business programs in teh country. you work with real stars and get your bachelor's degree in 2 years.
