college student in need of money

so i started college as a freshman this fall and have been actively searching for a job. i'm not on workstudy, so the majority of on campus jobs are taken. i've applied to some retail stores in a mall nearby, but it has been 2 weeks and i haven't heard anything.

then i started looking around at bulletin boards on campus and came across some "campaign jobs for obama." i researched those, but found that i would have to work 20hr+ a week! i'm a college student! i cannot realistically do that with my class schedule and courseload (i'm going to a small liberal arts college located in a metropolitan area). so i scrapped that plan.

but then i found these enticing things on the board that said "work at home, fill out online mailing forms and earn cash fast." of course, i pulled off one of the forms and went to the websites. but they don't feel too legitimate. here are two of the pages i found:

page125.com[/url</a>]
collegeworkpage.com[/url</a>]</p>

these seem really sketch. i have to pay a membership fee? this feel more like advertisements than job descriptions. will i really be paid for doing this kind of work?

i'm just so frustrated. a lot of my friends (both ws and non ws) are landing jobs left and right, and i can't! i've applied to about 3 places in a mall nearby, looked all over campus for non ws jobs (which exist, but the majority of which are taken by upperclassmen) and have resorted to these sketchy postings on bulletin boards.

advice? tips? i just want a 10-15hr/week part time job...

those friends getting jobs left and right are the ones you should be talking to. see if they can get you into their current workplace. i've done that for friends in the past or at least inform friends whenever i know of a work position that opens up. the most flexible jobs you'll find will be the ones on campus, so keep checking. there is bound to be something somewhere.

i have talked to them, but many are work study. those that aren't have a job in the city, but they said that they talked to their supervisors and were unable to get me a position.

i MIGHT get a job delivering newspapers around campus facilities weekday mornings, but that's maybe an hour day, paying $7, which means i could only make around $35 a week. that's some nice disposable income, but not enough..

Did you play any sports in high school? Get a reffing license--

My son refs soccer games--depending on the league/age of players, he makes $25-50/game. During the week, he can ref 1 or 2 games, and often does 1 or 2 or even 3 on a weekend. On a tournament weekend he might ref 6-8 games. He likes to do this because he can pretty much control his own schedule.

i did not play any varsity sports in high school. i just did alpine sports at my leisure with friends, so i cant really do any reffing.

You need to follow up with the retail jobs. Typically such jobs go to students who are assertive about pursuing them.

Agree with Northstarmom. Go for retail and service industry (restaurants, etc.) locations and pursue jobs there. I find my job to be super flexible; all I have to do is choose which days I want to work and I generally get them.
