I know this is somewhere already on CC, or on www.usna.edu, but does any college credit cross over to the Naval Academy? Any? Or does everything just go 'poof'? And, another thing: do I need to send my second semester transcript from college to USNA? Or were they only interested in my fall semester grades. Obviously for all those high-schoolers, it is a requisite duty, but is it for we college students? Thanks.

It doesn't transfer, but it doesn't go "POOF", either.

You will be given the chance to validate courses. That means you take an exam and if you do well enough, you don't have to take the course in question. IIRC, you can try and validate almost any academic course (I don't think you can validate professional courses).

For example, based on my work at NAPS, I validated 1 semester of Calculus, 1 semester of Chemistry, and 4 semesters of language. I ended up taking hi-track chemistry during Plebe Year, which I deeply regret.

Some credits will not transfer at all. Music, PE, etc.

pierce usna 2010 - First, congrats on acceptance! :D

I KNOW others with vast knowledge in this area will soon "chime" in but, I believe NO credits are automatically transferred. You can and will be able to "test" out of courses once at the Academy, however.

Z - how tough was it walking into Calc II at the Academy? I think Sis is considering it but is worried about "getting over her head" quick.

I had taken two semesters of Calculus in High School and another two at NAPS, so it wasn't too bad. I don't have my transcript handy (I'm still moving), but IIRC, I got a "B". Calc III was a little tougher, simply because I hadn't seen much of it before.

Trust me, if you study at all, and don't choke (see below), mathematics won't be that big a headache.

When I ran into trouble was in Differential Equations ("Diffy-Q's"). I had a solid "B" walking into the final, but bombed the final so badly that I ended up with a "D" for the course. That was an atrocious semester for me, and I still wonder how the heck I didn't get ac-boarded out.

The only real hurdle I faced in Math, from the standpoint of the difficulty of the material, was Engineering Mathematics, which to me was akin to having to learn Mandarin Chinese while deaf. I STILL have no idea WTH that guy was going on about. Some of it was simple (Matrix math), but other stuff was like, "Wha?".

So, in short, and unless things things have radically changed since my time, I found High-Track Chemistry to be dangerously difficult, Engineering Math to be completely alien, and everything else (including three semesters of EE) to be reasonable provided YOU STUDY. I DID NOT STUDY, so I allowed myself to suffer FAR more than I needed to, and got ZERO benefit for it.

PLEASE take this lesson, people! STUDY! CONCENTRATE! PAY ATTENTION! You only have one shot at 99% of your courses, and it's not like at Podunk U where you can drop the course and come back next semester. The pressure, both academic and professional (not to mention emotional) is RELENTLESS. People say that it pays to be in shape when you get there, right? Well, it PAYS to get GOOD GRADES and have TWO fewer things to worry about!

CHRIST! If only I could do USNA over again, knowing what I know now! :(

Ditto on the diffe-Q! I have no clue how I survived that course. I like the "learning Mandrin while deaf" :D

And you DO get validated during Plebe Summer, correct?

Well, you get an oppportunity toward the end of Plebe Summer to validate courses, yes. You also get further opportunities at the beginning of each academic year.

I know of one guy who read the textbook for some bizarre mathematics course over the summer and validated the course when he came back.

Can you say, "Brilliant" boys and girls?

And how about the grades that I'm working for right now? Any point in sending them to Navy when I'm done here?

You'll have to, as Navy still wants to see your final grades.

Even from a college? Will they want me to send them or will they call up my college and request them?

My BGO told me no college transcripts need to be sent, other than your first quarter/semester.

DMeix, I was under the same impression.

yeah...last week when I found out, I really did nothing for the rest of the week. My LT. gave me the option of dropping out of the unit, but I told him I'd stick with it.

While I really want to go home and actually have a summer longer than 2 weeks (last day of finals is June 9), I'm just gonna stay here and enjoy college life....and try to avoid a second round of 'senioritis.'

<shrug></shrug>

Maybe I'm wrong. Doesn't make sense, though, if they want to see your final grades from HS to ensure you didn't slack off.

"they want to see your final grades from HS to ensure you didn't slack off."

They do get your second semester of HS when you resend your HS transcript. As a college applicant, they still want your HS record, in addition to 1st semester college grades.

Just picture this:

Brian (me) goes home and opens the mail "la la la la la la HOLY CRAP!!! It's the thick envelope from the DoN!!!" <opens envelope=""> "YES I'M ACCEPTED"</opens>

next day in school...

"Screw you Mr. Keller. I don't need you and your stupid Economics course! I got into the Naval Academy!"

slacks off rest of the year...

Then you (or I) get your (my) ass whooped by USNA and lose everything!

haha wow what a stupid story lol

It's happened.

Yes I can only imagine. Apparently, they'll issue LOAs (Letters of Assurance) as early as September of the senior year of high school to some people. I can see how some of them would slack off and then get that LOA ripped away faster than they can say "Army".
