We visited Amherst College earlier in the month and my son really liked the campus and the surrounding area. Are there any other colleges/college towns that are similar in size, atmosphere, etc. here in the Northeast? Thanks!

UVM in Burlington VT is a little bigger than Amherst, but is very beautiful. Ithaca NY has Cornell and Ithaca College. Some kids would find these locations too remote, too far from a city for their tastes.
Are you specifically looking for small towns that have multiple colleges in them? Not cities, like Boston?

Bowdoin in Brunswick, albeit somewhat smaller in population.

^And it would be easy to get to Portland or Boston from Brunswick, also. It’s a really nice little town.

Thanks! To clarify, just one college is OK…And something smaller than a city like Boston is preferred…

Swarthmore is gorgeous. Sits on 300+ acres, which it shares with Scott Arboretum. Neighboring town (the “ville” to locals) is small and home to usual suspects in college town (food coop, etc.). More small shops/restaurants in nearby Media (5 min.) or a short train ride to Philly, and train stop is at edge of campus. Seemed to have similar vibe as Amherst. D didn’t like it, but she didn’t like Amherst either. Both too small for her tastes. I liked both, but what do I know?

What about Brown in Providence?

Town of Princeton is gorgeous, and the University isn’t half bad either!

^^^Was going to say the same!

When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swathmore
But she changed her mind one day.
Standin’ on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike,
“Take me to New York right away.”

Sorry, that’s what I always think about when someone mentions Swathmore.
