I didn't mean to offend by using the word "petty". I, too, thought about what my daughter should wear for scheduled on-campus interviews and meetings with professors when visiting colleges. It is just that, if you think about it, it doesn't matter what someone wears to sit in on a class. Regardless of the degree of competition for admission , what she wears to sit in on a class is not going to factor into how she is evaluated at all.

My daughter is tall and has trouble finding pants she likes that are long enough. When she went on college visits that included an interview, she wore nice jeans, comfortable shoes, along with a sweater set or something similar. When it came time for the interview, she quickly slipped on her skirt and changed her shoes. Most of the schools were in the northeast in the fall or winter, so there was no way this southern girl was going to walk in a skirt! Usually I had the job of carrying the tote bag with the change of clothes unless we parked close to the admissions office and in that case we left the change of clothes in the car.

As long as the clothes are clean and neat, most will not pay attention to what you have on.

Someday these young adults who only wear jeans will have to stop doing that for a job, a wedding, a funeral, a date, whatever

NOW is the time to start putting some basic stuff into the wardrobes that don't cost a lot

black pants, black skirt, some nice flats or heels, simple jewelry, watch, a portfoilo, etc

you never know when someone will say, hey, I have someone important for you to meet this afternoon

every young lady needs some basic pants that aren't jeans, it is part of growing up, they don't need to be expensive or anything at all

and if you aren't "comfortable" in anything but jeans, well, they should start working on that, jeans are not appropriate for many situations, and if a person is not themselves when wearing something that IS appropriate, it can hurt them

We are not talking about pink suits and wedges and pearls, we are talking about pants, a simple top and a sweater perhaps

and there are other clothes besides jeans that are casual

my Ds LOVE their jeans, but know when it is time to step it up just a notch

No worries about the D stepping the outfit up a notch. When the time comes, she will have all bases covered. It is the S that is ultra- casual. Well, he did wear a nice shirt/tie ensemble for graduation, so I guess he has some clue.

One suggestion: when shopping for that "interview outfit", look for wrinkle-free clothes. My D discovered that her favorite linen-blend pants did not travel well. She also discovered that new shoes can leave painful blisters after all that walking :)
