I'm going to the University of Washington in Seattle, WA for an exchange programme this December to June next year.

My question is: What kind of winter clothes should I get? I've lived in Singapore all my life and have never been to a cold country so I have no clue what will be adequate for Seattle's weather. I'm tried Googling for college-appropriate winter wear, but there aren't any relevant sites for guys.

You will want to dress in layers. Seattle has only a few days of snow or freezing weather per year, but lots of days of rain. When it is not raining, it is usually overcast. So, you really don’t need the kind of winter wear you would need for Vermont or Chicago. Look in some catalogs to get an idea what college students wear. Look at The Gap and Urban Outfitters and Eddy Bauer for starters. Then think about dressing in layers- shirt, sweater or fleece, and then a water resistant jacket. You will find that most Seattle people don’t use umbrellas, get a jacket with a hood and you are all set.

North Face. Look into the triclimate jacket. Its an outer shell that has the ability to “zip in” an inner shell or fleece for extra warmth. The outer shell is rain proof and wind proof… perfect for the rain and whatnot in seattle. So you’d probably only wear that but if it got cold enough you could zip in the fleece or whatever innner shell came with your triclimate.

^ yep, North Face is huge in Seattle. I grew up there: most everyone wears like the denali jacket or something similar. that’s really all you need. every winter i would either wear it over a t-shirt or layer it with a sweatshirt. i sometimes used scarves but rarely. i did have like a ski jacket but i didn’t need it that much. you will need rain boots: if you’re a girl look into the Hunter rain boots. they are super comfy and don’t wear out (ive tried other, less expensive pairs, and they are a waste of the $50 or so dollars).

jeans are fine. again, it doesn’t really snow in seattle but it’s rainy and foggy. i would really just invest in the North Face Fleece and good tennis shoes/rain boots. i think the coldest i remember was like 40 degrees so not too bad. im in ithaca, ny now and seattle seems SO mild lol.
