College with Dog?

I’m 16, dual enrolled in highschool and the local community college, and my dog is very old. I love animals extremely much, sleep with my dog, etc. However, my dog is getting up in years and the vet suspects she won’t make it to December.
I will (most likely) be getting my degree from the local community college. (I can get a BS for under half of what I have in my college fund if I stay on track, in 3ish years since I’m knocking out courses now). I will be living with my mom to save money. We are often like friends (minus the times when I need dicipline of course) and really wants me to stay with her (since I’m an only child, etc.) and I’m not one to turn down free meals and housing.
Now here is my question… She would support me in getting another dog because I love animals, and I’m sort of a private person so I prefer just being at home with my dog over going out with friends. Upon discussion she also agreed that she would tAke care of the animal when I could not. So the question is, would it really be unwise/bad to have a dog while I’m in college? It would most likely be something from the local shelter under 20lb. I know it is usually unwise to own pets while in college since you get busy, but I believe I at least have somewhat of a grasp on what college will be like since I’m currently attending the school where I’ll hopefully get my degree. However, I understand the unforseen can happen so if it is really so bad for the animal I suppose I can wait, it would be rather dissapointing though. Whatever the outcome I’m gonna try to provide my current dog with the best life she can have :c

How about if you try college for a year without it, and then decide?

Thats a really good idea! I should’ve thought of that. Thank you for your input

While it might be difficult to have a dog in your dorm room (though I’ve seen this several times), I don’t think it should be an issue if you keep the dog at home.

Also, I’m sorry that things are rough with your current dog right now. I hope you’re doing okay.

^many dorms probably won’t allow non-service dogs so keeping it at home (or living in a pet friendly apartment) would be best.

I second the idea of trying your first year without the dog and reevaluating.

Not fair to the dog. Wait until you’re in a more settled situation. (Hope all goes well with your older dog!)

I can’t imagine living without my pets but I am older and not in the same situation. My advise would be to enjoy the time you have with your current dog. If she ends up passing give it time before getting another one. The year long suggestion is a good one. Then decide with your mom if you should open up your hearts and home to another one.

The college I’m attending actually has no dorms, so it would be at home, but I thank all for their input. I’ll enjoy my dog and see how life unfolds.

I am a LONG time dog owner. The problem that you have is most landlords do not rent to dog owners (varies by area of the country). You options for housing after you graduate very likely be very limited.

My advice: Enjoy the time you have left with your dag and wait until you are in a stable long term living situation before getting a dog. Now if your mom wants a dog and also will care for it if you move out then I might consider it.
