Having a dog in college?

I am a college student living off campus with my own apartment and I really want a small dog to replace the one I had to give away. What are the pros and cons of having a dog while in college?

(If it matters, I go to a public school where tuition is $13,050/yr {$4835/yr once I qualify for in-starte residency}, so its manageable)

Lol.

Never live in the past but always learn from it.

Well if you have time to take care of it I’m sure that’s fine.

My friends had a cat at their house and it was fine (though the cat was constantly terrified by all the people that were over/parties and I’m pretty sure it accidentally got high one time, lol)

One of my friends who lives off-campus has a cat. I wouldn’t recommend having pets in college because they’re somewhat high-maintenance. Nonetheless, the decision is up to you.

If you had a dog in the past you know the cons. Among them …

1) You need to keep the dog on it’s daily schedule … you need to be home on schedule EVERY day for the dog to eat, walk, and talk care of it’s business … so no late decision to head directly to to your friends for dinner … depending on how close your apartment is to campus this can be pain.

2) It makes taking trips much more difficult … either you need to find someone to care for your dog … or bring the dog with you … makes trips to home, concerts, skiing, or visiting friends on another campus much more difficlut.

I LOVE our dogs … but found cats a much easier choice as a young adult with a pretty scattered schedule.

I have 2 dogs, My little puddle goes on a pee pad and my gs wait for me to get home to take her out. i have had dogs all my life and never had a problem

But my dogs are trained so i don’t have to put them in a cage for 8 hours, they walk around and get treats and entertain themselves til i get home

well the only cons i can think of is shedding. but my dogs are also 150lbs…

maybe wait till your out of college. i know pets can be fun, but this is a stage of life where you may not want to have any pets to be tied down to

I don’t think it should be a problem. I have had dogs…and cats all my life. Just make sure you have time for them, the dog is “potty” trained or whatever you call it (can’t think of the right term right now), an you can afford supplies. I think it’s nice having a furry companion in college :)

It doesn’t really seem fair to the dog because since you are still in school you might not be able to give it the attention it deserves.

Don’t forget some places won’t allow pets (what if you move?). Could limit you.
Do you have the money for shots and vet (should dog get ill or injured by another)
Will you take dog to training…do you have time?
What is a barker…how will you deal with that?

Dogs are fun, cute, great companionship and loveable…good point!

I have a 100+ pound German Shepherd.
Cons:
Food costs
Vet costs
German Shedder
Most apartment complexes don’t like German Shepherds

Pros:
I have a pretty badass dog
'nuff said.
