Colleges and Campus Life

Hey
I am probably going to UC Santa Cruz and i was wondering which college (Cowell, Stevenson, Crown, Merill, Porter, Kresge, Oakes, 8,9,10) would fit me best
Here are my questions (not ordered by imprtance, but just as they come up in my head...)

Which college is closest to the gym?

Which college has the best food?

If i dont accept sooner, do i have a less probability of getting into the college i want?

Which college has the best parties?

Which college is known to be the potheads/smokers?

Does your major effect which college you attend?

Which college has the best looking girls?

Are the bathrooms coed and if so is it awkward like guys being nasty and then girls using the facilities?

How are single dorms?

How are double dorms?

How are triple dorms?

Which college do you go to and why do you like/dislike it?

Cowell/Stevenson

IMO, 8/Oakes

No.

Supposedly, Cowell/Porter/Kresge. No personal experience on this one. On campus parties are rare.

Porter/Kresge. Somewhat true, somewhat stereotype.

It doesn’t. At all. Really.

I have no idea what you find attractive, so I won’t answer that.

Yes. Usually the bathrooms aren’t gross.

I’m at Crown. I like it because it was easy to find people who share my (nerdy) interests. We have awesome events. I also benefit from knowing a lot of other engineering/science students.

Cowell and Stevenson.

I like college nine and ten because you can always find something, but otherwise Porter is pretty good.

No

All the colleges have parties to some extent (even Sterile Merrill), just all about contacts and networking. I live at Porter and I can always find something to do on the weekends. On campus parties are not rare, just really gotta make the contacts. Being near Porter Meadow the first few weeks is a must but you can go there from any college.

Porter and Kresge are the stereotyped as the stoner colleges, and to some extent its pretty much true, but you can live here and not be in that crowd and theres no trouble.

No it doesn’t really matter, but it does play a part in the core classes that freshmen have to attend. As a Film major or something like that though it is much better to be associated with Porter because of certain scholarships, this probably applies to other majors and colleges.

Depends on what you find attractive but, Cowell/Stevenson as well as College Eight have some of the cuter girls. But its not like there aren’t any at the other colleges either.

Depends on the floor. I live in a co-ed bathroom and so far its not been too bad. The bathrooms are generally nasty but I guess they could be worse.

Single dorm rooms are pretty great, being able to do things without the worry of bothering your roommate is a glorious thing. Especially when you have differing schedules and you want to sleep earlier or later.

I started out with a double but my roommate eventually moved to a single so I was left with a double to myself. Its been great because I get twice as much room too myself, plus its big enough to get quite a lot of people in it.

N/A

I live at Porter. I love it here because the people, the atmosphere, a great view, did I mention the people, good food, not to far from my classes, the meadow, and just a lot happens at Porter (ie. the naked run, open mic night, etc.). It is far from the parking lot where my car is which is a drag anytime I want to leave campus, but thats partially the permit I have (this might not effect you since you are a freshmen). Um, pretty much anyone who lives at Porter loves it I feel like.

In my opinion, 8/Oakes has the best food.

In terms of on-campus parties, probably Porter/Kresge. But I find that a lot of people from all the colleges go off campus if you want a bigger party.

Yes, unless you live on a single-gender floor/hall. Then it’s supposed to be a single-gender bathroom. And yes, they do get gross. But that’s expected when you’re sharing it with some 25+ other people.

They are really nice. At least at Porter they are. There’s generally plenty of space, and it’s great because they can fit a lot of people in them. So if you and a bunch of friends want to hang out but not go off campus, you can get away with a lot by living in a triple or quad.

I’m at Porter. Right now I’m living in an apartment and last year I was in the B building dorms. I love it because of the people. Most people are really friendly and open to making new friends, etc. I don’t like the transfer community. I feel like it completely changed the atmosphere of Porter. Also, it can get pretty loud, especially if you have a room that faces the quad. But I find that to be less of a nuisance because it’s sort of fun to have that “dorm experience”.

Which college is closest to the gym? Cowell/Stevenson

Which college has the best food? haven’t gotten a chance to try porter kresge and only been to 8/oakes once so Cowell/Stevenson

If i dont accept sooner, do i have a less probability of getting into the college i want? don’t think so

Which college has the best parties? Stereotypically porter/kresge but I don’t really know about on campus parties as most people go off campus if they want to party

Which college is known to be the potheads/smokers? porter/kresge stereotypically but you’ll find them at every college

Does your major effect which college you attend? no it doesn’t really matter but core courses are sometimes cater to one major over another

Which college has the best looking girls? can’t answer this one

Are the bathrooms coed and if so is it awkward like guys being nasty and then girls using the facilities? they are coed it’s awkward on the first day but you’ll get used to it quickly and soon it’ll just seem normal to you. The nasty part it depends who lives on your hall, my first year was relatively clean this year much nastier

How are single dorms? the con is that is relatively small the pros is that you don’t have to deal with a roommate and all the problems that come along with it

How are double dorms? great it’s bigger than a single but then you have to share it with someone else too but there’s plenty of space and unless you get a roommate from hell it shouldn’t be a problem

How are triple dorms? small there’s not a lot of space but it’s livable and it could be cool if you have two great roommates. I had a friend that lived in one last year and she loved it

Which college do you go to and why do you like/dislike it? I’m at Merrill and despite our stereotype it’s fun and not isolated at all. There are some great people up here. It’s probably quieter than some other colleges like Porter and there are some people here that aren’t really social but you’ll get that at crown too.
