Colleges and GPA?

are GPA's recalculated when you get to college? im confused on the whole system... because i have, if i recall correctly, a 3.5 or 3.6 unweighted GPA at a competitive high school.

however, i take 3 honors courses. my unweighted GPA would be at least a 4.0 if i did not take any honors courses. will this matter? will they know i am challanging myself and see that is why my unweighted GPA is lower?

i really hope so, because otherwise, i have been wasting my time.

also, do colleges take into account your high school? i go to a public school, but it is a very good school system and it might as well be a private prep school because we get about the same amount of work.

please let me know any information you have, thank you!

..anyone? =(

Some colleges will recalculate GPA to only be that from academic classes, some will only use unweighted, and some will not look at freshman year, but don't let that make you think your honors courses were taken in vain. Most schools will look more favorably upon a B in an honors/AP course than they will an A in a regular course, even if it hurts your GPA. Many schools just look at your better class rank (weighted vs. unweighted) if your school ranks. Even those schools that unweight your GPA take a very close look at the difficulty of courses you took.

thank you, that makes me feel better!!
