Colleges and Wikipedia

I recently found out that if you go to wikipedia.org, you can type in any college name and get an interesting synopsis of the college or university. Like anything else, it has to be taken with a grain of salt, but it includes noteable alumni, trivia, traditions and all kinds of fun facts about the schools. This does vary, based upon the information that has been submitted, I guess.

Start with New York University or Brandeis or Princeton just to get the hang of it ... make sure you type in "college" or "university" after the school's name in the Search field.

Again, this is just for fun, though it could prove to be somewhat helpful in learning about schools and their culture - or even the towns/cities they are in as you can search that too. :)

Enjoy!

Yea, wikipedia helps a lot if you are about to interview for a certain college and want to make sure you know about the college.

Only, once you are in the college, don't ever, ever cite Wikipedia for a source on a paper. My daughter tells me that if you do, it is grounds for immediate "failure", public humiliation and worse.

There are some real inaccuracies on Wikipedia, caveat emptor

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Using any encyclopedia in a college paper as anything other than a preliminary 'what should I focus on and look into' is not appropriate. Of course, I'm not allowed to cite textbooks in my science classes but no one would tell me I shouldn't first read the text to get an idea of what to search for in the primary literature.

As I said, take it with a grain of salt. I would not suggest using it as a source for a research paper. I just think it's a fun way to get a sense of the culture of a school.
