Colleges by the beach?

Hi all!
I've been looking into going to school by the beach, but I'm not sure where. I live in Missouri, so I'm looking Carolinas, Florida, possibly Texas, but not Cali. I would be a transfer student, 3.5 gpa. I'm looking for a medium to bigger school, nice campus, lots of things to do, good academics obviously! The town I live in now is pretty boring, so I'm looking for a city with some liveliness.
Any suggestions, or places to start searching would be great! Thanks!

Hey

I found this list:

http://collegeapps.about.com/od/collegerankings/tp/colleges-for-beach-lovers.htm

You can check them out and look closer at those that appeal to you.

Old Dominion University, Virginia might also be worth a look!

Good luck!

Well, FAU and Eckerd college are both in FL and are VERY near to the beach, idk if you feel they’re good enough and want prestige though lol

Also add College of Charleston (in South Carolina)

A major omission from that list is UC Santa Barbara.

Carissa…

How much will your parents pay? Transfer students rarely get much for aid, so if your parents won’t pay most/all costs, you’ll have a problem.

However, if your parents will pay $55k+ per year then you’ll have some good choices.

Coureur…Isn’t it too late to apply to a UC? Besides, the OP said not Calif.

Edited to add…

Carissa…in another post you say that you’re a Pell Grant student. If that’s true, then it’s not likely you’re going to find an affordable school to transfer to unless your stats are so high and attractive that one of the few schools that “meet need” for transfers accepts you. A 3.5 GPA isn’t likely going to get accepted to the few schools that give lots of aid to transfers.

It’s nice to want to go to school “by the beach” but you have large financial constraints…there isn’t a tuition fairy out there. You’d get your Pell Grant and a student loan and likely not much more.

this really shouldn’t be news for you. In an earlier thread you wanted to go to DePaul and found out that you’d get little as a transfer student. DePaul isn’t much different from most schools. You’ll find that pretty much everywhere.

Do you have a state school that you can transfer and commute to? If so that may be your most affordable choice. Does the state of Missouri have state aid for low income? if so, apply to instate schools. What about Truman St?

Well, UCSB, UCSC, UCSD, and CSUMB are in California, which the OP does not seem interested in.

Any university in Hawaii is also near beaches.

However, the cost factor as already mentioned needs to be considered.

Old Dominion is by the James and Elizabeth Rivers among four or five naval/marine stations and naval terminals.
I doubt there is much “beach” there.
Unless you meant Virginia Beach, which is about 25 miles away.

UNC wilmington. Once called UNC by the sea, but not so much anymore.

Brown, obviously. But, are you thinking more somewhere warm?

Brown? I suppose it’s near the beach, if you count Newport 45 minutes away. I can think of many places closer to the water.

Yes, also the south carolina state system has some schools close to the beach.

Is there a school in Galviston?

Poetgrl
There’s a school called Texas A & M - Galveston. It’s known for its maritime academy.

Btw OP, would you want access to the beach every day (even during winters) or just occasionally? Because if it’s the former, you’re going to have to basically restrict your search to schools in the very very deep South, Florida, and University of Hawaii.

All true, but I was responding to the list linked to in post #2, not the OP.

Northwestern has it’s own beach on campus.

Flagler in St. Augustine FL… the town is very nice, very close to beach, and it’s quite inexpensive for a private to begin with. You might get some nice incentives!

Yes, I forgot to mention Flagler. There is also Florida Tech too. Keep in mind these are private though ;)

I wouldn’t put Northwestern’s Beach, on Lake Michigan which is lovely but cold, on the same list as many of these other schools.
