Colleges currently represented in Broadway PLAYS

On the Musical Theatre majors forum, there is a discussion about the ‘Big 10’ colleges that performers currently (as of 9/15) on Broadway attended. Someone said it would be good to have a similar list for plays.

So, I looked for the current Broadway PLAYS (I went back to the fall of 2015 and forward by a couple of months–if the casting has been announced) and here’s what I found. Several got their MFAs so I indicated whether it was an MFA or bachelor’s degree when I could, since we’re focused on our kids’ bachelor degrees right now. Also, there were a number of them who didn’t list colleges in their bios. I googled them and when there wasn’t a quick link to say which college, I put them on a ‘no college/none listed’ list.

Oh Sorry !!! You meant Plays, not musicals!! I opened the wrong can of worms. I don’t know how to delete. Very sorry!

Rutgers Mason Gross - Hand to God director Moritz Von Stuelpnagel. Thank you for taking the time to put this list together.

How as someone interested in this niche do you overlook Lin Manuel Miranda who wrote and stars in Hamilton and his classmate Thomas Kail directs? Both from Wesleyan.

I see - Plays.

That’s right @MiddleburyDad2 this thread is for ‘PLAYS.’ There’s a similar thread in the musical theatre majors forum for ‘MUSICALS.’ Various theatre-related articles/blogs focus a lot on who is in which musical and I wanted a spot for acting-specific kids to find their role models as well. Check it out

I know the thread is regarding Broadway Plays, but just for fun I thought I’d add the Cast List from Shear Madness which is Off Broadway at the New World Theater. Several of the cast members did not list their alma maters,so I only listed those who did or found easily.

Jordan Ahnquist (Tony): BA Theatre, Muhlenberg College
Adam Gerber (Mike): MFA The Old Globe/USD; is a graduate of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting
Kate Middleton (Barbara): BA Drama/BA Communication, The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
Ethan Dubin (Understudy): BA Theater, University of Chicago

.

@3boyzmama that’s great! Off-Broadway plays would be a great place to find our kids someday!

@lovetoact

OTOH, the Pulitzer Prize for best drama DID go to a musical this year:

@circuitrider - I don’t think anyone fails to recognize that there is crossover between musicals and straight plays. But since the other thread already existed (and Hamilton is well documented and discussed on it), I imagine the OP thought it would be nice to give a shout out to the other side.

And btw- since the Pulitzer Prize for drama was est in 1918 - a musical has won the award only 9 times.

I realize now my post could have profited from an emoticon

Thanks @toowonderful ! That was exactly my intent! I love both genres but this board isn’t quite as active as the other and I wanted to share the wealth with these kids too  That being said, for the rest of this season, there are two Bway plays and four musicals opening (season ends at the end of this month for Tony consideration)–and one of those plays has only one cast member! I’ll post as they open (American Psycho opens tonight, but that’s for the musicals forum)

My D saw American Psycho last weekend- she loved it.
