I'm not look for the top colleges. I have financial as well as academic obstacles that are solid enough to prevent me from getting into top colleges, so I'm not looking for any obvious top expensive choices like Oberlin, Kenyan, Northwestern, University of Iowa, etc.

I have a 26 act (though planning/hoping on getting a 28 when I retake it)
I have a 3.6 gpa, a few extra curricular activities. I received a 5 on my ap eng lang exam, and am a decent enough writer to get some essay scholarships, except I still can't afford anything near a 40k annual college cost.

I reside in Michigan, so I'll take some Michigan college advice, though my goal is to find an affordable, underrated but excellent out of state college:D

I want a medium size school, preferably with close access to a city (for networking/more opportunities in journalism). Any journalism program resembling Mizzou's would be awesome, haha. But the college would have to have to have a minor available in creative writing, and be strong in its social sciences.

I appreciate all help! I know there are a ton of similar boards, but I've read through the bulk of them, and all I'm seeing are a list of tier 1 colleges, and I'm looking for more of a....realistic approach!

What’s your EFC? Aside from need based aid, If you increase your ACT enough, you could automatically qualify for scholarships at some schools (depending on your final ACT score, anything from part tuition to full tuition).

You might start with a list like @CE527M’s and find schools like Simmons or Emerson that are strong in journalism and creative writing, or journalism and the social sciences (a much more difficult thing to determine but much more common than good creative writing programs), and then run the net price calculators for those schools and see where you are. You might find that you need to look at midwestern or southern schools (because they either begin cheaper or offer more FA) to get yourself to a price you can afford. You could also look at all the schools whose costs of attendance come to 40K or less and focus on finding good journalism, creative writing, and social science programs. One such school with a low starting price is UMinn-TC at $27K OOS.

So, multiple strategies and flexibility are going to be key. Run those npcs.
