Colleges for Musical Theater Major - Part 37

It's amazing to me that this thread has been going on now since I wrote that first post on April 5, 2002. At that time, we were actually done with this process, my daughter had just decided to go to Hartt but a good friend's daughter was just starting this process and having a hard time picking safety schools. I was frustrated by how difficult it had been to find information for my daughter and thought I'd post to see if I could help her. I never imagined it would still be going almost three years later. Best of luck to everyone with their auditions in the coming months!!

Boy - do we all owe you!!

Just for the sake of the record, I checked back in the archives (my H, the college professor, was originally tenured in History, so these things interest me), and it appears that the original thread began on April 5, 2002, by someone named Cathy Brant. Now as I type that, I'm thinking that Cathy Brant IS cbs57!! cb = Cathy Brant, right? Wow.....

It does seem a long time ago - my D was a sophomore in highschool and is now a college freshman. I honestly don't think she'd be where she is today without CC and all the great folks who helped us along the way. We are in your debt.

I repeat. Thanks Cathy!!!

We should celebrate somehow this April.......a get together?......several get togethers?..............hmmmmm................ worth thinking about.......

I hardly know what to do with myself there are so many topics from which to choose under our new MT heading! What a wonderful surprise to find we are elevated to this level. As the parent of a now-auditioning-senior I am oh-so-grateful to all who have gone before me. (Do I sound like Oprah Winfrey thanking Barbara Walters or what?!?) I know I am way way more knowledgeable because of this forum. My D might argue I'm TOO knowledgeable on this topic sometimes! In any case....Cheers, gang!

Where would we be without this wonderful forum??? I have to say that we are so much more knowledgeable about every aspect of choosing MT for college and as a potential profession because of all of you who have posted for the last two years. It has also been a wonderful source of support as we go through the very difficult and often trying process of applying and auditioning. As the mom of a h.s. senior, I am glad to know there are others out there who understand how different the college process is for a performing arts major. Thanks again!

which schools usually accept walk-ins for these auditions? I am auditioning for Hartt, Boston Conservatory, Ithaca, Univeristy of Miami, Webster, and Emerson. I found out that Hartt is at 10 am and boston is at 5 pm....I got lucky on the first day. I just found out that ITHACA is full on february 8th...a little hint on getting those audition times finalized...I have to audition on the ninth which throws off my schedule a bit. I have never done a dance audition before..can anyone tell me what to expect? I wouldn't call myself a strong dancer, yet I can move...I'm really nervous about it. I'm also worried that my comedic monologue may not be strong enough...my songs are great, my uptembo is very obscure. My ballad displays a lot of acting skill. My dramatic monologue displays my passion for acting. I'm not sure about the comedic one. It's about a san francisco public librarian who just found out that he has been fired. He takes it out on the children..haha...I like it, but since I didn't get into NYU i'm doubting myself.

Theatermom,
I second the motion to get together in April somehow once all the decisions are made. Or would that be May? great idea. Fun to share stories, such as "I can't believe I did this" or "guess what happened to us on the way to the audition".

Hey all,

As soon as I get a chance I'm going to change all the links on the FAQ site to direct to the new thread breakdowns. Just thought I'd keep y'all updated (oooh, look at that Texas slang coming into my vocabulary!)...

Shauna

Edited to add: Done!

Thanks for sticking with this, Shauna!

Would the song "just in time" be considered a ballad or an uptembo...The song is from the musical bells are ringing...if anyone knows, I would really appreciate an answer....frank sinatra sang it also
just in time
i found you just in time
before you came my time
was running low

Ariya -- I'm not a music professional, so this is just a guess based on knowing the song, but I'd say up-tempo.

Ariya-

I classify it in my class as a moderate up tune.

How cool would that be if we could all meet! I am in California and I know that most of you are back east. I could dream can't I?

I too am so grateful for this thread. Not just for the great people I have met here online, but it is an amazing resource for my students and parents.

I think my first post was two years ago about this time when my S was applying for conservatory programs. Amazing. He is now a second year actor at CMU. I'll have to have a look at the old posts sometime.

I would vote for a meeting in California, but I also understand that most are from the east.

i'm posting this question 2 places, so if you see it twice, that's why. first of all, i, too, liked the old way. this is better if you're looking for a specific topic. but the other way was like a running conversation and more fun to read. but, to my question. i'm wondering about sam houston state university and how it ranks. they claim to rank themselves in the top 10 programs but, i'd like your responses. we're in the dallas area and thus just aren't interested in the northeastern, california and florida programs. i'm aware of ocu and we considering that. but, i wondered about any programs in texas, louisiana, missouri that are highly ranked. i have another question. i know many schools put on showcases or take kids to new york to audition. in schools where this isn't done, is there a good way for a student to get a job with a touring co., etc. for instance, are there open auditions somewhere for these touring shows or is there a general showcase somewhere. in other words, do you really need to attend school where you know they provide a good hiring opportunity? jamie

Hi! I posted this question on the last thread before it closed, and I'm not sure if it went unseen or if no one has any information to share...University of Central Florida...any info?

mrsark87 - We too are in Dallas. I've asked about SHSU a couple of times before, and just haven't gotten much feedback. Back on Part 5 of the old forum, Whimsical posted that she was attending and loved it. I never seen "top 10" mentioned with SHSU though. We have not visited, but consider it a reasonable safety school. Have you considered OU? Outside OCU, it probably has the best program in the southwest. At the North Texas Drama auditions, the College of Sante Fe was there with a MT program. University of Lousiana - Monroe was also there, touting a MT program, but I don't find it on their website. Webster (St. Louis) was also at NTDA, and I know that it is highly regarded by some on this forum. I think 5pants S's go there. I know that some schools (such as OCU) have producers and casting agents come through Oklahoma, and they recruit students. OCU downplays the importance of the senior showcase.

How about two meetings? one on the west coast, one in the east? :-)

I live in Philadelphia and would love a meeting on the East Coast, but if it meant we'd ALL get together, I'd be happy for an excuse to come to sunny California!!.....(can you tell it's gray, damp and cold here today?..........)

Ariya, I'm afraid I can't answer your question about the Unifieds because my D didn't do them. I'm curious, though, about your monologue about the librarian. It sounds very familiar. :) What play is it from?
