Colleges for Musical Theatre-Part 38

And this is totally off topic, but....this Philly girl is headed to Jacksonville tomorrow for the Super Bowl. Go EAGLES (20 year season ticket holder). So, good luck to all auditioning this weekend and I'll read all about it when we return.

Have fun Bdwaymom. My D's boyfriend (who is heading to Tisch in the fall) is from Philly coincidentally, and he is also headed to the Super Bowl. As I have not lived in Philly since I was 18, I am not caught up in the hoopla but I have a feeling my brothers are into it. My dad died last year but I know he would never believe those Eagles finally made it. I remember in high school that we had season tix to the Flyers and then I was there for the first Stanley Cup and that was a big deal but this, I bet, is gonna be bigger. We also had season tix to the Phillies and when they were in the World Series, I was in grad school in Boston and came down for a night to see a game (had to explain THAT to a professor!) I was on a college visit with my daughter in Boston this past fall on the night the Red Sox won the pennant...now THAT was big. But living here in VT, there are no national sports teams.

HAVE FUN

H and S1 are headed there as well on Friday.

Susan, the coincidences keep coming! When I was growing up, hockey was a big part of our family life. My brother played and we went to Flyers games from the time the franchise started in '67. We also went to Jersey Devil games at the old Cherry Hill arena. Wow, that seems so long ago!

My mom is a big Eagles fan and is very excited about Sunday's game. Although she no longer lives in the Phila. area, she's imported some TastyCakes to snack on during the game for good luck. :)

OT....Alwaysamom...the Jersey Devils played SO close to the house I grew up in and at the rink I recall taking skating lessons at. I remember skipping school for the huge parade and event at the Army Navy stadium when the Flyers won the Stanley Cup.

Ah, and the name, "TastyCakes", something NOBODY up here would have heard of, brings back memories of my dad, who used to eat them for BREAKFAST when I was growing up.

Add another to the list! - Grew up in Havertown (western Philly suburb) and now in Mt Airy (a residential neighborhood of Philly).

My Dad, who was a basketball player at Wake Forest and on a farm team of the Brooklyn Dodgers, took all of us to Eagles games growing up. Nothing like the uppermost seats at Franklin Field (celestial seating, that is) and we also had season tickets to the Flyers from '67 on..... Those were the days.....

Is there anything better (or anything that has a weirder name) than a Peanut Butter Tandy Cake? E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

Superbowl and Philly:

I'm in Arkansas and work at corp. HQ of ALLTEL Corp., a communications company. I do tax work for them. ALLTEL has the naming rights to the stadium in Jacksonville where the Superbowl is being held. They are making a HUGE deal out of this. They gave away trips to the Superbowl and during the game will announce a customer as winner of $1 million. All I won as an employee was $100 in an employee contest (which is still great!).

My cousin Ann F. lives in Philly area (Narberth, a suburb?). Theatermom doesn't know her - I wonder if others of you do. She grew up in Kansas City area and has 2 elementary age kids.

We'll watch the game from Bloomington, IN. I'll be thinking of those of you going.

Soozie,
do I need to bring you Tastykakes on your visit to PSU? You all are right...nothing like a tandy take or a choc cupcake with a big glass of milk.
LOL...I love how our theater discussion has become a football and sports one...my daughter is probably up at school reading this and rolling her eyes right now! And yes...E-A-G-L-E-S...EAGLES!

BdwayMom, my theater daughter could care less about football (truth be told, either can I) and ironically two schools on her list are big with the football teams...UM and PSU. Growing up in rural Vermont, there is no big local sports scene and if she were to go to either of those schools, that whole scene would be quite a change.

You can bring me a Tastykakes and I could bring you maple syrup. Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program.....
on with the show...
Susan

More Tastykake lore....
I remember getting care packages of Tastykakes from our family when we were first married and living in South Dakota.... We couldn't wait for visits east to savor Phila. cheesesteaks and Breyer's ice cream ( things that obviously couldn't be sent by mail.... )

Peggy, another congrats to your talented D!! And thanks for your frequent assurances that things DO work out in the end.

Whoa, what a deluge of Philadelphians!! Is there something about the Philly water that passes MT talent on to the next generation? I'm hoping the pre-Super Bowl adrenaline there puts everyone at UArts in a great mood for the kids (like my D) who are auditioning there this weekend. :-)

I'll be pullin' for Philly, but we'll still have fun at the Chicago auditions - - without a mention of the Bulls, the Bears, or the Sosa-less Cubs. :-)

Jamimom - Thanks for the info. on Juilliard auditions. I told Eric about it - our travel plans will really be tough next year with 11 schools (which I hope we'll narrow down). Eric said if Juilliard is too much trouble, he won't do it. He realizes how slim the chances are. It sounds like it requires staying over an extra night just in case of call-backs, and their auditions don't seem to be when anyone else's are. Also, Jamimom, I can't remember - what happened with your son at Michigan? Did he go to the Nov. audition? Does he know yet what he is doing? I'm sorry I can't keep everyone straight.

Unified auditions - can someone remind me if it is possible to get in 2 auditions in one day at unifieds? Thanks!

My daughter is signed up for 2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. I heard that it's possible to do more, but it might be too stressful.

He did all of his MT auditions by December. He was in the first group of kids auditioning at UM and was deferred. Two weeks to the day was when the acceptances and denials arrived, but the deferrals took a while, but there was the Christmas break. He has withdrawn from all of the MT schools except CMU where he would have applied early had they permitted it, as he has been accepted EA at Yale. Juilliard was a bust for him. A lot of trouble as he had an athletic conflict that day. He managed to get the time switched to AM at the last minute which meant he could make it make for a tournament because my brother was kind enough to drive him. Of course that meant he would not make it for the callbacks as they are in the evening. He left his resume and called for me to e-mail it to my brother who left work even earlier to give it to him, which he did not even need--they said they'd take it if it made him feel better--the auditions ran late, found out later the afternoon even ran later, and they took 5 kids. He did enjoy a great meal at Shen Lee's across the street, however, and they gave him a 10% coupon for the Juilliard store. The that they took did not do into call back until 6:30 according to the kid he switched spots with (he was assigned the morning and did not want to be there all day). They took 4 for call backs in the afternoon. Now, those kids had to stay till about 10pm, or so they were told, and they would find out in March, I believe, if they are in. Because it was a Friday, my brother ran into terrible traffic driving S to the tournament, and S did terribly there, the worst performance in two, maybe three years. My brother could not believe the schedule this kid keeps and how high maintenance he was. Fortunately, S had enough sense not to tell him what they said about the resume that my brother really bent over to get to him. The auditioner were three older women, that S called the "Fates" . He did a great replay of the audition, but I guess they were not impressed. Since there are just 4 session, and with so few called back, my guess is that most of the callbacks are in since there are only about 20 in the program. If I have my numbers here correct. S did see many of his friends there, it was a real cattle call, he said, with a number of adults there who had already finished an acting program. Lots of cigarette smoking as well, he reeked of smoke which was tough on my brother who is allergic to smoke and was stuck in the car with him. Well, he always wanted to audition at Juilliard, and so he did. He had to cancel the voice audition as the conflict was not resolvable for the time slot he got, but I don't think he was prepared for it anyways. I have not been hearing any classical pieces lately. He is working on two shows, one Shakespeare, one MT and that has been consuming his time.

Wow, we're also geering up for the big game. We live NW of the city. That's how we refer to Phila.("the city"). Lived here our whole lives, except for college. What about "Butterscotch Krimpets"? Another Tastycake treat. Philly definately has team spirit. I hope those visiting this weekend get to see what a great city it is. Judi

For what it's worth, I was born in Bryn Mawr Hospital and spent three years in a converted barn at Sumneytown Pike and Swedesford Road. Haven't been back since the age of three, but it must be in my blood. 1776 is my favorite musical.

Jamimom:

That Juilliard audition certainly does not sound that great. Glad you are close enough to drive!

Congrat's on the Yale EA! Will he study drama there? My son has a friend going to Yale next year from here - either ED or EA, not sure. She was a theatre friend and is great in music (violin), but I don't think she plans to study either of these. Another of his friends was deferred for the early decision at Yale but is hopeful to get in. Tell your son to look for Little Rock people and ask them about Eric.

Another Philly Fan here. GO EAGLES!!! I grew up in Manheim, Pa near Lancaster, 66 miles NW of Philly. But I must disagree-Tandytakes (not misspelled for those of you who don't know) are the best.

D and I leave Sunday for Millikin audition and unifieds. (8 hr. drive I think.) We will arrive in time to see the superbowl in the hotel room, then hit the bed early I'm sure. Peggy, I have been too busy to breathe lately! Will Stephanie be around on Monday?
