Hi all, Hoping you can help me. My daughter just finished her sophmore year and is starting to consider colleges. Does anyone have any experience with college sailing and recruiting. I have three older kids in college but never tried to go the recruiting route and really don't know where to begin and when. Do we start junior year? Do we contact coaches when we go to visit schools? Etc. Would like any advice or feedback you can give. Thanks!

You can find the list of colleges with serious sailing teams by going to [Sailing World’s College Rankings, September 18, 2013 | Sailing World](Sailing World's College Rankings, September 18, 2013 | Sailing World). Not all of them recruit, and even then most coaches have only two spots they can really support, if they can at all. Yes, you contact the coaches before hand and set up a meeting if possible. I suppose you know there are no scholarships for sailing and that for most students it is basically just a nice sport to have on their resume of ECs. Unless your daughter is finishing at or near the top of national events (high school, Laser Radial, 420, or Youth Champs) don’t expect the Ivy coaches to be too interested in supporting her. If she is, or is superior to the majority of female skippers (let’s say top third of a 100 boat fleet) and has the right grades for the college she wants, you’re in business. Sailing ability will not overcome the hard facts of GPA, SAT, Course load. If you are still interested I can give you more information about the colleges my son has visited and coaches he has talked to. He belongs to a sailing team that has seen many members go on to sail in college.

College of Charleston!
