The website shows they participate in Birthright and Challah for Hunger, as well as holding student led Shabbat services. I would also check out their FB and twitter. The website estimates 700 Jewish undergrads - not a small number.

Jewish sorority would be another source of info:

Happy New Year to all! My D, now starting a master’s program, found lots of good info here when she was college searching. And she has discovered that her local Hillel offers FREE food…always a good motivator for staying connectied!

Does anyone have any information about Jewish life at Georgia Tech? We are very interested for my son, but are a bit concerned about the lack of Hillel building on campus. It seems they share the facility at Emory which is not around the corner. GT seems to have a Hillel, but their web site has not been updated in 2 years!

We are a bit spoiled with the great Hillel at Elon for our daughter, and we would like the same experience and opportunity for our son who is interested in computer science.

@mnm111 - I would be interested as well - for us, I think it would be better to go to Emory and do the engineering at Georgia Tech, with a home base Hillel at Emory, perhaps.

I just don’t see those 5 year combined programs as a viable solution for schools that don’t have engineering programs. I cannot imagine leaving the first college after 3 years and then transferring to GT as an upperclassman. Who would want to leave their friends they have made just prior to senior year? Imagine how tough it would be to just show up at GT at that point and start all over again?

Elon also has a similar program like Emory for these engineering students.

Comment on the Missouri question. While I am not familiar with the jewish element at this school, I will share a very good and unique thing about Missouri. It is one of the few Big State schools that make it easy to get out of state tuition. They even encourage it. You can get instate tuition after one year. They offer generous merit scholarships for the first year for out of state kids. Then, if the student stays in Columbia for the summer between frosh and soph year, you get instate for the last three years. Missouri and Texas are two of the very few states that encourage and make it very easy. In fact, at Missou, many kids don’t even spend the summer. They get a sublease, give a credit card to a friend, have them make a few charges a week, and they claim they were there. Just thought i would share…

I will add my wishes for a Happy, Healthy year to all. Special thoughts and prayers to our friend who is struggling with illness this year. I truly feel that the folks who post on this feed are warm & kind & very helpful - thank you for the support you may not even realize you provide.

My son has a break this week but he will be back to college apps between the holidays. Still working on our list but think my son has finally finished his general common app essay. Will let you know if we come across any new insights in the process. Best piece of advice so far has been to make sure to answer the question that is asked (& not try to cram your “pat” essay into the response). It’s taking my son longer, but I can see that he is trying.

Georgia Tech has the second strongest Hillel in GA and does not share facilities with Emory. It’s an excellent choice for a prospective Jewish STEM/ business student. You can read more about the various events on Georgia Tech’s Hillel’s Facebook page.

The usual suspects I think. He is also applying to CMU, MIT, UM-CP, UF, UCF, and UM. I also suggested NC State, but I’m not sure if he heard me.

So, a little on Jewish life at Georgia Tech

Link for Hillel site, may not be updated for this year yet, but note the links at the bottom of the page for a newsletter signup, facebook, contact us, etc.

Re Mizzou Question: I haven’t posted in ages, primarily because my last child is graduating this year from Michigan, and I am no longer in the college selection phase. I do browse CC periodically and I want to answer the Missouri question. I live in Kansas City and have many friends whose kids attend Mizzou. My father-in-law was in a great Jewish fraternity there (AEPi) and I also think they have Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi. The Jewish community in KC has mostly migrated from Missouri to the Kansas suburbs in the past four decades, so most kids who stay local attend KU instead of Mizzou. I can’t find an AEPhi chapter, but I think the Hillel is pretty active. The kids who have gone there are pretty happy. I have a friend whose daughter is a freshman and she is very active in our Jewish Federation, so if you have more questions I could contact her.

Thanks for the link to the Ga. Tech ZBT site. I was a little sister at Ga. Tech ZBT back in the late 70’s – it wasn’t very Jewish then (around 10-15%) and from their web site, it appears even less Jewish today.

That’s interesting about ZBT. I hadn’t clicked on the “Brothers” link. Nationally, it is a predominantly Jewish fraternity, but apparently not at GATech. If the Brothers link is accurate, it doesn’t seem to have a large membership at GATech either any more.
