Colleges own application vs Common Application

Do schools have a preference whether you use theirs or the common app. Particulary University of Miami.

If they offer both--they really shouldn't. Drexel does the same thing and I e-mailed them asking if one has more advantages of the other, the answer was no for them and I'd guess it's the same for U Miami.

My observation from past years: they aren't supposed to favor one over the other and they don't.

BUT.... if their supplement has different essay prompts from the Common App prompts, SOME schools would really like to see you tackle their own prompt.

If they didn't care, they wouldn't have two applications. Its really not that difficult to take 10 minutes and fill out the college's application. Use the same essays it doesn't really matter.

^ Colleges that use the Common App sign a contract saying they won't prefer either. Use whichever one you like and be done with it. They can't penalize you

I was going to use all of the colleges' own applications in order to show interest... but then I realized how much harder that would be for my teachers that are writing me recs. I'm glad to hear that it wouldn't have made a difference. :]

CommonApp would probably be better 'cause your teachers won't have to fill out as many different recommendation forms.

I don't think it really matters, but for JHU the supplement to the common app is essentially the entire app released by the college so it doesn't matter. Saves counselors and people time because they only have to fill out one form and then copy it :-).

Possible to send different essays to different colleges via the common app?

^ Yes (read the Common App FAQ on their website)

If you use the university's app, it shows more interest.
