Colleges requiring (or not) Covid vaccine for fall 2021 megathread

The same reasoning about risks becoming voluntary due to vaccine availability where they used to be involuntary applies to faculty and staff.

A college can “require” students to get vaccines because they have leverage. Students who don’t comply don’t get to enroll. But how are they going to make faculty or staff get the vaccine? They have to go through the unions first. And even if they didn’t, what are they going to do to enforce it? It’s not in their best interest to start firing people. It takes months to replace faculty. And nobody wants a financial aid or registrar’s office staffed with temps who have zero institutional knowledge. It’s better to get buy in through education and encouragement.

Let’s move on from who should get the vaccine or who should be required; there is another thread for that. Focus on the topic as posed on the original post

Rowan University in Glassboro and Stockton University in Galloway Township say they are leaving the decision up to the students at this time but plan to provide both educational resources and opportunities to be vaccinated.

“We’re not mandating it, if the state obviously requires it, then we’ll require it,” Rowan spokesman Joe Cardona said.

Lewis & Clark : Students may request an exemption from the vaccination requirement for medical or non-medical reasons as provided by Oregon and federal law. For students who find it impossible to be vaccinated prior to arrival on campus in the fall, we anticipate having vaccinations available through our Health Service.

Hurrah! Penn announced they will require students be vaccinated.

With the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines now well-established, and with the importance of mass vaccination so central to our commitment to having a safe campus environment, the most significant new element of our plans for the fall is a requirement that all students be vaccinated. Exceptions will only be provided for medical or religious reasons.

Will apply to faculty, staff and students. “Together, the CSU and UC enroll and employ more than 1 million students and employees across 33 major university campuses, so this is the most comprehensive and consequential university plan for COVID-19 vaccines in the country.”

It’s contingent on FDA full approval (not just EUA).

Note the different levels of “required”, from a weak form at USC (allows student to sign a form for personal exemption and acknowledging risks and agreeing to additional requirements to be allowed on campus) to a strong form at Bowdoin (medical exemptions only for students). How broadly religious exemptions are allowed can also vary.

Boston College " will require all students, faculty, and staff to be fully vaccinated (with FDA-approved vaccines) against COVID-19 before participating in any on-campus activity related to the 2021-2022 academic year. Exceptions will be granted for legitimate religious and medical reasons."
