I'm looking into colleges that are very similar to UW Madison but out of the state. I am originally from Wisconsin, don't get me wrong I love the school, but I really want to explore some OOS options. The criteria I am looking at so far as similarities go are...

Relatively Liberal Schools
Very accepting of LGBT population
Medium-Large (10,000+ student population) Universities
Selectivity: Medium- High (50-20% acceptance rates)
Located in large, urban, metropolitan areas
Pretty good sports teams/ good school pride
Preferably no religious affiliation
Preferably a coastal school

Students are relatively happy and have a good quality of life.
Schools I already sorta figured were similar are
UM-Twin Cities
UMich
UCLA
UCBerk
UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Cruz
BU
and USC
Anywhere else?

Just wanted to remind you (you may already know) that many public universities limit financial aid to out of state students. This is especially true in California, where they see out-of-0state students as a source of revenue to make up for state budget cuts.

BU does not really fit in with these other schools… it is a very urban “campus”… that is, it practically blends into the city and it’s hard to know where the campus ends and the city begins. BU is not known for sports or “school spirit” in the traditional sense (outside of hockey… hockey is the only real super “rah-rah go BU” type thing).
