Colleges suited for Indian for UG

While its rather tough for indians to make it into IVy league collegs and other major universities, what are some of the good universities that they should reach for. ie: for students who aspire to study abroad for their UG, rather than at the IITs.

OP, there are 3400 colleges in the US. With the information you’ve provided I can recommend Indian students should reach for any one of them.

So if you have a particular student with particular grades and scores in mind, please let us know that info.

If you just want the names of the best schools in the US, there are books that suggest that information. Might I suggest you look at this website and respond to the suggestions of the first post:

<a href=“Before you ask which colleges to apply to, please consider - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1621234-before-you-ask-which-colleges-to-apply-to-please-consider-p1.html</a></p>

The College of William and Mary.

Sorry i wasnt more accurate before, I mean those colleges that indian students with thier ushual lack of EC and stuff cna get in Aand are worth leaving thier home country for… I know i’m being a bit tediuos but there’s a buch of us here friends utterly confused by it…

There are many. We need to know:

how much the family will pay
the stats
the major
any other preferences.

OP, you and your friends, then, need to do some reading on the matter. We cannot begin to give you that information. None of us has that much time.

@jkeil911 : We read about most of the top colleges, but found out that only 6 of them are need blind. and we couldnt find amherst or dartmouth among the top 50 lists. Therefore we do not know if leaving india to join them would be good or not… It is these kind of confusions you know, and also we found university of california in the top 20. As it is a state univ we were not sure about the status of it. you see this is the kind of prob we r dealing. I’m sorry i was very vague before…

@ mom 2collgekids :
Family pay : need full scholorship.

Stats : Most of us are appearing for the SATS this october. And for toefl in september.
we all have a 90+ % in our high school but just like most indina student not much EC’s. Student council, Exhibition participation at regional, national level, Few sports certificates ,etc only.

Prefered major : science majors ( physics or maths prefferably), but most prefference to engineering courses.

Preferences : regions that dont have very very extreme climate.

okay, here’s the next step. Take a look at these urls that purport to list all the schools that offer international students aid:

http://www.educationusa.info/financial-aid.php</a></p>

http://www.desperateguide.com/us/top-25-financial-aid-colleges-in-us-for-international-students-need-aware</a></p>

http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/the-short-list-college/articles/2013/09/19/colleges-that-give-international-students-the-most-financial-aid</a></p>

You might have better chances at the less than ivy schools if you have ivy resumés. If you are poor, you might look at the Questbridge program; I THINK they consider applications from Indian students. If you are middle-class, forget about it.

Coming here will be very difficult to do. Usually only the top (dozen?) students in all of India come here on full scholarship. If there are women among you, they might also press the elite women’s colleges for help.

Another thing that @jkeil911 forgot to mention is that you need to determine your EFC (Expected Family Contribution), even at the schools that promise to meet full-need. Your EFC is the absolute minimum amount your parents will be expected to pay towards your education based on their income and assets. If your EFC is unaffordable, your only other option is to pursue merit scholarships. These are usually very competitive for international students, but it is difficult for us to say if you would be a contender for them without your SAT score. In what range do you usually score on practice tests?

Come on guys. International Students that receive Full Ride Scholarships are very rare, each year there maybe less than 10 from India that is granted by US schools. We are not talking about American Indians, we are talking about International Students.

My suggestion to OP

Finish UG in India and apply Advanced Degrees in US.

Apply grants in India for attending schools in US.

Any top US schools is at your foot, if you are one of the 10 lucky top students from India. For Example, if you are one of the International Science Olympiad finalist.

I know the odds are highly against me. But studying in one of the ivy league schools was my dreams. But once i came to know of the odds i turned down the dream( still preparing) a little and decided to apply and try my luck at other “not soo high” colleges. I am maybe not one of the top 10 students like you said,
but i thought I’d give it a shot. What do you guys think?..
@ butterfreesend : jumps up and down… 1900 - 2100 now. Still got 2 more months till october SAT 1. Looking forward to 22200 or above…

And thnks guys for replying…
