I know New College and Reed don't really use grades, I think it's written evaluations you get to apply to grad school or for yourself.
Does anyone know of any others that are similar?? My son wants a small liberal arts school. He will major in Philosophy. But he is sick of the grading game, as am I. He is thirsty to delve into intellectual conversation with like-minded kids, but why grade the thirst for knowledge?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
THANKS!!

I don't know if they've changed their policy or not, but I think Brown used to offer a lot of courses pass/fail.

Students at Reed earn traditional letter grades that are recorded on a traditional transcript. But Reed de-emphasizes grades. Students do not see them unless they specifically request them on individual assignments or at the end of a course. Rather than assigning a grade, professors write extensive comments on papers, exams, and lab reports.

Warren Wilson College also deemphasizes grades. You do get a report and transcripts but there is no recognition - i.e. deans list etc.... Very non-competitive.

THanks everyone! I will check all this out!

St John's College grades too are deemphasized. No grades written on papers or told to stdents for orals. (Which does mean there is a lot of subjectivity in grades there.) Students only know their grades if they go to the registrar and request to see them. But it's the most intellectual environs in America so don't go just b/c you think it's easy w/o grades being emphasized. Same w/ Reed which is #2 to SJC in intellectual vigor.
