Colleges to Apply

Hello all,

Please suggest a list of reasonable colleges that I should aim for. I am in Texas and my goal is to get into the best college I can with my stats. Ideally looking for a school with a very strong computer science / Engineering program. With my stats I guess Rice is out of question which was my dream.

Virtual learning did not go well for me at all so my 11th grade GPA dropped.
My current GPA including Half year of 11th grade is 3.5 unweighted 4.4.
PSAT 1230 (took in Oct of 11th grade)
Haven’t taken SATs or ACT yet. MY NMSC score is 191
Finances are not an issue at all but my parents do not know much about college admissions and cant guide me.
Problem is that I have nobody to guide me and it seems like whenever I talk to my school counselor, I am bothering him.

Courses that I already took in 9th grade

English 1 H
finished algebra 2 H and geometry H
French 2
Computer science 1
AP human Geo
Biology H
Arts 1.

10th grade

English 2 H
Precalculus Honors
AP world history
Physics Honors
AP computer science principals
Computer maintenance
Spanish 1

11th Grade
Gifted Talented AP American studies AP Lang AP US history (2 credits combined course)
AP Calculus (struggling here so don’t want to continue calculus will drop half semester)
AP Chem
AP Psychology
Advanced computer sciences
Spanish 2

12th grade selections so far

Spanish 3
English 4
Ap US Gov and AP Economics (half credit each)
Statistics
video programming possibly
ARTS 2.

Thanks

Having issues in Calc and shooting for the best school that you can get into for CS/Engineering are not two statements that go together.

Definitely try to make your sat above 1400 to consider good schools because your academic rigor is good but your unweighted gpa is on the outskirts. Also you have to try to get better at calc because that’s just the basics for engineering. I would recommend uploading your stats to college vine and then checking out the colleges they suggest for you. Just know their chances are a little inflated so don’t get your hopes up too much. Also your Extracurriculars should be good as well and essays. Additionally try to search for a nonprofit to join or an organization that will provide you with guidance for colleges

Rather than dropping AP calc second semester can you take a regular level calc class? What grade did you get on AP calc first semester?

I had an A in Precal in 10th grade so I took AP Calculus AB for 11th grade but Virtual learning just did not go well. I have a C in AP calculus AB so dropped it. I was thinking once we restart in person learning should I just take AP calculus AB again in 12 th grade?
Thanks for all the responses.

What math class are you taking now and did you drop the class before the deadline or after because if it’s after that would look very bad on your transcript. Usually they give you like a month or two before it is permanent on your transcript

For the next six months, will have no math class. I dropped before the deadline

Alright it shouldn’t be that bad then as long as you make sure you do very well in calc next year. Also try to exceed next year and then get a recommendation so the teacher can outline your failures and how u overcame them. If calc isn’t your thing then try statistics but bc ur going into engineering u really need to excel in calc

What is your score distribution on the PSAT? Normally someone that is in AP Calc in 11 grade would have a very high math score (700+).

560 in Math and 670 verbal
