I was wondering if people could suggest some schools for me! I like Pomona and Bowdoin (do they seem like good fits?), but I was wondering if people had more suggestions for me....

What I'm looking for:
Strong academics
Intellectual atmosphere where kids are motivated and actually want to be at the school
Students are bright and lifelong learners
Not a "cutthroat" place (I prefer cooperation where students form study groups and help each other if anything)
Not a huge "party scene" or Greek lifestyle
Smaller-middle sized school that is mostly focused on undergraduates
Northeast region, mid-Atlantic, or California
A sense of community
Happy students
Great professors
Good lifestyle
Nice campus, dorms, etc.
Students get into good graduate schools
Study abroad and/or internships available (same with Research)

Possible areas of study:
Economics
Psychology
Pre-Law
International Relations
Finance
Political Science or Government

Stats:
96.6/100 unweighted GPA with all AP or Honors classes
I do not yet have my SAT or ACT scores so I can't add that in yet (sorry!)
200+ hours of community service
Captain of Indoor and Outdoor Track as a Junior (captains for next year (my senior yr) not yet decided)
Maine Youth Leadership, 1st chair of my orchestra, play in a nearby college ensemble, etc.
All-State for violin freshmen, sophomore, and junior year
Many other extracurricular activities

Interests:
Music- I'd like to join some sort of chamber group or orchestra if possible (I play the violin)
Writing- most colleges have newspapers of some sort
Running- either a free workout center for students or running trails or something

Are there any schools that come to mind?

Thanks!!

There are literally hundreds of schools for you to pick from。You need to narrow down for us AFTER you have PSAT/SAT/ACT scores and your financial conditions(affordability). In addition, you also should indicate the size of the schools, sports, desired financial aids and if you like public or private schools.

Are you male or female? If female, I think any of the former Seven Sisters schools would fit you to a tee and satisfy all your "what I’m looking for"s. My daughter was especially looking for “Intellectual atmosphere where kids are motivated and actually want to be at the school” and she was VERY impressed with that aspect at Wellesley, Smith, and Mount Holyoke. They all also have terrific study abroad and research internships integrated into the curriculum.

If you like schools like Bowdoin and Pomona, then many of the schools on that national liberal arts list will probably appeal to you - places like Williams, Swarthmore, Amherst, Hamilton, Colby, Bates, Colgate, College of the Holy Cross, Middlebury, Bard, Colgate, Vassar, Trinity, Occidental, Claremont McKenna, Pitzer. Those are extremely competitive schools, though, and they will rely on high SAT scores. Many of them are test-optional though (the FairTest website has a list) and so with your high GPA and good extracurriculars, you could be competitive regardless of your test scores.

Some less competitive/more matchy colleges might be Connecticut College, Skidmore, Marist Muhlenberg, Wheaton, College of the Atlantic, Bennington, Juniata, Gettysburg. Some are outside of your desired area, like Furman (it’s in NC), Elon (NC), Rhodes (TN), Lewis & Clark (OR), Beloit (WI), Kalamazoo (MI), DePauw (IN) and St. Olaf (MN).

I will have my SAT scores back on Thursday…

For PSAT scores I had well over 70 for math and writing but 68 for reading. However, I have been practicing the reading section so I will see if I was able to bring that up on my SAT.

I have been doing really well with the ACT, and I’ve been scoring at above 33 for practice exams. However, this is not final as I do not take the actual exam until April 12… I will post that as soon as I know.

I am not sure if I will receive financial aid; as of now that is not a factor.

I’d prefer to have a smaller-middle sized school. Public vs private does not really matter to me. I’m not looking to be recruited for sports, so that is no matter as well. I’d like to partake in intramural sports as well as orchestra/music groups if possible.

Yes, I am a female. It never crossed my mind to look at the Seven Sister schools! I will definitely look into that. Thanks so much!!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions!! I will try to look into them and see what I can find out.

Thanks again, everyone!

Anymore suggestions?

Look through the US News list of top 50 or so national liberal arts colleges.
There are many excellent LACs outside New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and California.
Examples: Reed, Whitman, Colorado College, Carleton, Macalester, Grinnell, Oberlin, Kenyon, Dennison University, Davidson, University of Richmond, Sewanee, Centre College.
