Colleges to look into/tour?

I see that someone recommended Bard and Vassar. They’re both a train ride from NYC, but could be good options for you if it’s only access to a city you want, rather than being in one.

Okay, so tentatively I have made a short list:

Reaches: Northwestern, Brown, Pomona

Matches: Scripps, Wesleyan, Vassar

Safeties: University of San Francisco, Occidental, Sarah Lawrence

Does this look accurate? Do I have a realistic perception of my chances at these schools? Thanks for all your help so far, and I always welcome new suggestions!

Vassar, which is not too far away from NYC
Macalester, which is in St. Paul, MN
Scripps College or Pitzer College, near LA
Sarah Lawrence, near NYC
Oberlin, not near a big city, but sounds like a great fit

I don’t think Wesleyan and Vassar can ever be considered matches for a female due to their competitiveness, but coming from the west coast might give you and edge

Agree. Also, each college has a net price calculator on their website. You should run that for any college you plan to visit. A lot of parents say they can/will pay without realizing just how expensive some of these colleges have become.

Hi guys! I’m back and I’m solidifying my short list of schools. The main thing is, I want to find more “safety schools” that I know I definitely could get into if I applied. Basically, schools with a >35% acceptance rate and whose academic averages I exceed. Obviously I would still like my safety list to meet most of my criteria… Any ideas?

Based on your setting preferences, you can try these online articles for further ideas: “The 25 Most Desirable Suburban Schools” and “The 25 Most Desirable Urban Schools” (Newsweek).

35% acceptance rate doesn’t make something a safety. Oxy, for instance, might be a low match, but I could definitely see them rejecting someone (you) for yield protection.

My first thought reading your post was Vassar. If you manage to do as well on the ACT as you did pre-ACT, it should be a match for you. As for safeties, Oberlin, Skidmore, Bard, Bennington, although as mentioned above, schools in the 30-35% aren’t true safeties but if your scores are in the top 25% and you do not need finaid, your chances for acceptance are greater. Bennington is a def safety but might be construed as such and denied based on yield results.
