colleges with film majors

hi i was just wondering if you could recommend any schools that aren't film schools but have good/reputable majors/programs in film that you don't have to specially apply to, preferably 1st tier universities or liberal arts colleges.
thanks!

Do you mean like a film studies program, as opposed to a film production program?

The University of Southern California has completed their $100 million dollar cinematic arts complex. It has top notch programs in film and tv production, screenwriting, interactive entertainment, animation and digital arts.

Also at the School of Cinematic Arts, within the university, is the cinematic arts critical studies major. Classes are small and there is interaction among the Thornton School of Music students, School of Theatre and other SCA programs. Check this site for more information: www.cinema.usc.edu .

Applicants must be accepted by the university as well as SCA.

My first thought is NYU. Fantastic film and a great university overall. But are its arts schools too specialized for you?

I believe most of the best film programs actually are in universities rather than art schools.

MooMoo52,

Penn has a film studies major and minor within the CAS.

It depends on whether you are interested in film studies or film production. Some have one or the other.

Film production programs that DO NOT require talent based application at reasonably higher tier university:

 1. Northwestern
 2. Boston University

University of Texas at Austin
