My S wants to go into Film Production with an emphasis in Directing.
He did a couple summer film intensives at colleges in the past 2 summers. Last summer at Emerson and has a great film for his portfolio. He has done a couple of local internships as well.
Stats: GPA (unweighted = 3.2) with a few AP classes Weighted = 3.5) He attends a tough boarding school and they do not rank their students.
ACT = 28
He has applied at the following schools:
Emerson (EA) (his very top choice school)
UNCSA - just had his interview this past weekend and is waiting to hear back ( loves this school as well )
Loyola Marymount (EA)
Pratt
DePaul
Ithaca
So far he has been accepted at:
SCAD (Savannah) -received a really nice scholarship here
Columbia College Chicago
Any advice on the programs from any of these schools? Did we miss any good schools that would match up with his stats? We tried to get a balance of schools from reach to safety. He prefers bigger cities and really liked Boston and Chicago, but if the program is strong, he doesn’t mind going to a smaller city like UNCSA. He won’t get any need based aid and money isn’t an issue - although scholarships are nice
Any advice during this anxiety ridden waiting time would be helpful and appreciated!
Hi! I believe my husband and I sat at your table while our boys auditioned. Have you heard anything yet? Our son got into Ithaca with the Rod Serling Scholarship, but still not a peep from UNCSA. Good luck!!!
Hi @csggirl! Yes, I hope all is well with you and your family. Nothing from UNCSA yet, but he felt like he had a really good interview. My S got into Ithaca as well and received the same scholarship. He was excited to get it! This waiting game is tough!
My Daughter got email today which states she is waitlisted at UNCSA. Kind of surprised as her stats are really good. Ive heard they only accept a minimum on this first round, so waitlisted is ok.
We also applied EA LMU which we hope to hear soon. The waiting is brutal!
She also applied:
LMU
Chapman University
USC
NYU
UT Austin
She is accepted to:
Columbia College Chicago
Webster University, St Louis
@csggirl - not sure. I have heard that some hear back in Spring, but I know my S had a friend that heard back in May/June and switched to go to UNCSA. I wonder how many students got accepted after the interview portion and how many got waitlisted. Definitely a stressful time for these kids.
@karme1121, @csggirl: My daughter says she heard that UNCSA on first round only accepts 20, defers/waitlists 30, rejects 50. Not sure if the second round of interviews the same? Hopefully we will hear something by Spring at the same time as her other schools release decisions.
@Karme1121 Our S was also deferred at LMU. Got the Presidential Scholarship at Hofstra - which is more known in NYC than LA. We will have to see what happens with that UNCSA waitlist, but we can only wait so long. Pretty sure he will be signing that contract for Ithaca College. It was his first choice all along.
Hi @csggirl! My son got deferred at LMU and Emerson. Emerson has been his top choice all along so that deferral stings. He may wait it out a while and see what happens at UNCSA and Emerson. Ithaca is a great school and I know my S liked the program and was excited to get accepted there. We may be seeing you there in the Fall!
@Karme1121 and @BBlume, we have not heard a peep from UNCSA since our son was waitlisted in Dec. Have either of you? Do you think it is appropriate to ask how far down a candidate is on that list? I keep hoping for a last minute surprise.
@csggirl we have not heard anything yet, but I think there are another round of interviews in Feb, so maybe we will hear after they make those decisions.
@csggirl and @BBlume - we have not heard anything yet. My son talked with admissions and was told that “they” meet after each interview round and the waitlisted/deferred student’s applications/files are brought up in those meetings as well. My son has a friend that is going there and he was waitlisted as well. He didn’t hear back until May or June. So it can be a long wait, but keep the hope and let us know if anyone hears anything.
Wow! UNCSA was my daughter’s earliest application due on Oct 24th…crazy. May or June? We will hopefully have committed to another University by that time. A lot of the schools have date of May 1st commit date. She is accepted at LMU, Columbia-Chicago and hope to hear on Chapman U this week. We should hear on the last of her other schools (UT Austin, USC, NYU) most likely by mid-March but at latest by April 1st. Film School is a different animal for sure! Thanks for the update. We’ll let you all know if we hear anything as well. Good luck to you all and your sons! Hang in there.
@csggirl and @BBlume - my son got an email today from UNCSA that he is being “recommended for admission to the School of Filmmaking”. So now it has to go over to the Admissions department and will take approx 3-4 weeks until he hears back from them. He is very excited…but now I will bite my nails until we hear back from Admissions.
