I liked Boston when I visited and want to major in computer science. The problem is I’m not good enough to get into MIT (even with my SAT 2330 and GPA 4.79 my ECs are really mediocre so I’m pretty sure…). So I was looking for any other colleges that are good in computer science in Boston. Would be nice if you majored in CS in Boston at some college that is not MIT and share your experience with me. Thanks
Take a look at Northeastern. They’ve been pretty generous with merit aid to high stat CCers in the past.
Tufts?
Would you consider MIT, though? Stranger things have happened than an academically qualified applicant with mediocre being accepted (although its not odeal) if they’re science driven.
Also BC and BU.
Unfortunately, after MIT and Harvard, you have a significant drop in the quality of CS departments in the Boston area. Why are you so narrowly focused? The US is a large country. You should check our schools like Cal, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Princeton, Rice, Texas-Austin, Washington, Wisconsin-Madison etc…
Tufts and Northeastern both have very good computer science programs. Slight edge in pure quality would probably go to NEU.They’re very different kinds of schools though. BU has a pretty good program. There’s no reason you have to go all the way to Texas or California though.
Actually Harvard is far from the best school to go to for computer science. You would get a Harvard education with a smattering of CS.
Tufts has very good CS…and has it in two depts…Eng’g and A&S.
Are you saying that because you like the city, you want to go to school at any school in the Boston area that has good CS?
What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay? do you have a non-custodial parent?
Have your parents run the NPCs on the websites (not just H because H gives super aid).
What is your home state?
There are many, many very good CS programs in the US, so do you have to limit to the Boston area?
Regarding tufts & CS:

Also, not far from Boston, though also highly selective: brown.
D1 majored in CS at Tufts, and is now working in Silicon Valley at a well-known company. She’d never programmed before starting college, which to my mind speaks well of Tufts’ CS department.
I’m sure there are many, many schools in the Boston area which can give you a great CS education.
I forgot to mention, Brandeis has a pretty good program too. Would be a relatively safe bet with those stats. It offers an LAC-like environment within a larger university (reminiscent of Tufts) if that’s something you like. Not in Boston proper, but pretty close.
Thanks guys! On this subject- do you guys know any colleges that are matches for me outside of boston? (with high sat/gpa and meh ECs its a bit hard to find matches because I think most people do it by comparing their sat scores with the 25/75 percentile…) I already have a list of colleges I want to apply to…but just if you have any noteworthy suggestions that I might want to consider?
@codemachine Doesn’t “science driven” imply that the person has lots of amazing ECs related to science? Meaning it all comes back to ECs haha. ha. ha
@mom2collegekids My home state is Maryland (meaning I could probably go to college park, which I think is pretty good in CS). I think my parents made a savings account for college when I was little but idk how much?
@Alexandre @mom2collegekids I’m not limited to just Boston. I was thinking that it would be nice to study in Boston.
Do you have a location or state preferences?
By that I meant showing an interest in science classes, and yes, even some EC’s haha. From my school, one of our band members with strictly artsy EC’s was accepted RD to MIT, while our val last year was denied EA with science EC’s and one of the few A’s in Chem AP ever in our school. Something to think about…
Northeastern, Tufts, and Brandeis all have excellent computer science departments. BC is not really that good. Boston University is decent, but Northeastern is much better and the campus life is pretty much the same except for just a different trolley line.
