Hi; I'm a current high school senior, and I'm planning to major in civil engineering and minor in music performance in college. Does anyone know any universities with strengths in these areas? Thanks in advance!

Does U of Rochester have Civil Eng???

There are a number of schools.

What are your stats? GPA and test scores …including SAT breakdown

What is your home state?

How much will your parents spend each year?

What types of schools do you like? Big, small, quiet, rah rah, rural, city, etc.

collegehelp: I believe it does. They have a great Engineering School, and an excellent engineering program. They also have the Eastman School of Music, which is one of the top music schools in the country. So that would be a solid university to apply to if you have the grades.

Other universities, such as Yale, also have great music and engineering programs.

mom2collegekids:
Gender: F, from California
Half Chinese half European ethnicity (not American citizen)
Extremely competitive public high school
Weighted GPA: 4.38, UW 3.9
Tons of Honors/AP classes (all honors/ap senior year)
3 years of architecture classes at my hs which exposed me to structural engineering

SAT: hoping for over 2200 once october scores are out…currently have a 2150 from May
Subject tests: 760 Math 2c, 720 Chem (will retake in november)

ECs
I’ve played violin for 13 yrs and piano for 10…it would be piano performance that I’m interested in minoring however
A ton of orchestra/chamber music experience, won some competitions, played in masterclasses and festivals all over the U.S.
Most of my community services is aimed towards helping kids with their education…I cofounded a club for kids at my school, read to underprivileged kids, tutor a lot, hold piano fundraising concerts for them, etc…
Swimming for two years

I think I would prefer a small school, preferably closer to home (for my parents)
My parents are willing to pay around the cost of a UC, so around 30k/yr

Any ideas? Thanks so much

Check out university of miami, engineering school and frost school of music

Many engineering programs have students who also excel at music - and high level music opportunities are available - although the courses in music are not necessarily available as a minor. For instance, look at MIT, and Case Western. And Cornell. In California look at Stanford and Santa Clara. Harvey Mudd offers music both in its own program and throughout the Claremont Consortium. All the Ivies have opportunities for music for the students even if they’re not majoring. You could also continue to take private piano lessons, and just participate in chamber/orchestral music as an extra-curricular.

Be aware, however, that often schools with Schools of Music or Conservatories attached will not provide access to the main music studios and ensembles for non-majors. You’ll want to investigate that.

First, if I were you, I would look at schools for your main interest, engineering, and then look into what musical opportunities there are - both extra-curricular and for credit.

“her universities, such as Yale, also have great music and engineering programs.”

Yale does not excel in engineering. Michigan excels in engineering and music. Easily top ten programs in both areas.
