Good colleges for engineering + music & my chances at these colleges? Balance between the two

Hello! Thanks for taking your time to help me.

I'm a rising senior starting to apply for colleges. Here's a basic skeleton of my accomplishments:
<a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jaeT_RkfSowjU98jtHcdYGWwRvjUAAndUSLONmisGuw/edit?usp=sharing">https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jaeT_RkfSowjU98jtHcdYGWwRvjUAAndUSLONmisGuw/edit?usp=sharing</a></p>

I'm interested in engineering and music. What are good engineering and music schools for me based on my credentials? I want a dual degree program in both. If not, then dual major.

What are my chances at these schools:
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Upenn, Williams, Swarthmore, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon. I know they are reach schools.

I know there are dual-degree programs I want such as Harvard-NEC and JH-Peabody.

Also, what would be good match schools for me? Primary focus: engineering and music
(asian male, by the way)

Any comments, questions, recommendations, and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Add UMich to the list.

Bump! People please help!

CMU is good for both engineering and music. I see that’s already on your list, and I think that might be the best one for what you’re looking for. I also agree to add UMich to the list. SUNY Stony Brook is also good in both engineering and music from what I’ve heard, so that might be a good safety as I don’t see any safeties on your list.

Northwestern has a dual degree program, I think there’s a columbia one as well. Have you started the common app? I think your chances depend heavily on which of the many activities you’ve listed that you decide to emphasize. I think you have a good chance(low reach/match) at all except HYP and MIT. For MIT, you’ll need a more focused application, and HYP are hard to get into no matter who you are. Good luck and chance back? Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Upenn, Williams, Swarthmore, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon

Just remember that a lot of the Ivies lack good performing arts programs( Harvard has no performing arts degree). If you are just looking to play causally then pretty much any university will do as there are always pretty talented kids in the all university orchestra. So yeah it depends whether you want to major in music or just play.

what other safeties would you recommend?

can’t I still major in music though? Engineering would still be my primary focus over music

Think seriously about UMich. You can double major music performance and engineering. Many students do that there. It should be a match to high match for you. The music school offers very good scholarships to talented students. I know several students at the Music school and one even got full scholarship. The CoE also offers $20k scholarships of honors to top oos students ($8000 for in state). Your credential is near the range for that scholarship. You should definitely give it a try. UMich CoE is among the top 10 in the country and is better than some of the schools on your list.

Here’s my music resume, as its my number one passion: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FqxiFfHtt45z4y0SBGb7XwYnOqCQ5C-PC6BbycjM8PI/edit?usp=sharing</a></p>

It’s not that I don’t want to apply, it’s just that I’m limited to schools in the East Coast :(

A couple thoughts: Williams does not have a 4 year engineering program. They have a 3-2 program with Columbia. Engineering and Music is a challenging combination as, usually, both have many requirements. You have an excellent resume and should be in the conversation at the schools you list. But, they are reach schools for everyone. As you focus your list and visit, ask each school about the feasibility of a dual degree or double major. Also, talk with someone in the engineering department and the music department. My son attends Swarthmore and is a double major with music as one major. Most of the music majors are double majors, including one music and engineering major. It is possible, just difficult. Swat also has a very active Christian Fellowship. I strongly encourage you to visit Swarthmore and talk with professors, particularly the Director of the Orchestra. They can be very helpful.

Oberlin might be a good match school. They have both a music conservatory and a college of arts and sciences. If you’re accepted to both, you can double major.

@lacgrad‌ that’s awesome! My sister goes to Swarthmore; she told me that engineering majors weren’t allowed to double major, but I guess in your son’s case he’s talented enough to do so! I was also planning to visit schools after I got in to them. As I start to apply to these schools, what would your advice be for me, and do you think I have a good chance at these schools, keeping in mind that they are reaches for everyone?

@Ranza123‌ due to location, I have had to cut many excellent schools from my list: I’m limited to schools in the East Coast :/

To clarify, my son is not an engineering major, but one of his classmates is an engineering and music major. Since your sister is at Swarthmore, you should definitely visit there and ask questions. I would encourage you to visit some of the schools that are close to you. Visiting gives you a better sense of the school which is helpful in applying and in writing essays. Your essays are crucial in painting a picture of who you are, showing your interests and what you bring to the college community. You appear to be a competitive candidate for the schools you are considering. There’s just a lot of competition…

You did not say which engineering discipline you are interested in, but Tufts could be a good fit.

It is located on the east coast (about 2 miles from Harvard and about 4 miles from MIT)

It has a small, but highly regarded engineering program that generates positive outcomes for graduates.

http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report-2014/best-schools-by-major/engineering</a></p>

It offers all the traditional engineering majors, plus an unusual interdisciplinary minor in Music Engineering (sponsored by Steinway).

<a href=“Music Engineering at Tufts”>http://www.tuftl.tufts.edu/musicengineering/</a>
<a href=“Music Engineering at Tufts University - YouTube”>Music Engineering at Tufts University - YouTube;

Engineers can also double major, minor or just take courses in a liberal arts discipline (such as Music)

The music department has a partnership with the New England Conservatory which allows cross enrollment as well as the dual degree program. It also has a new music center that has been billed as the best small performance center in the Boston area.

http://as.tufts.edu/music/program/nec.htm</a>
http://as.tufts.edu/music/musiccenter/about/overview.htm</a></p>

You would need to check with somebody to see if an engineering major and the formal NEC dual degree program can realistically be done together, but taking courses at NEC is certainly possible.

I assume you know how challenging it is to get into the NEC program, and the acceptance rate for Tufts Engineering was at 14% last year and dropping. Chancing you makes no sense because Tufts admissions (including engineering) is highly dependent on your essays. As lacgrad suggests, visiting is really important.

@Mastadon‌ wow thank you! that was very informative and now I have another school I can apply to that suits my needs! thank you very much :)
