I am looking for colleges that have good research programs, and are not too hard to get in to. (Average GPA 3.0-3.5) If you know of any that would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

Can you give more info what you are looking for? Do you mean college as opposed to university? What kind of research, any field in particular?

Since cost is usually a big part of college selection what is your home state and how much do your parents plan to pay per year?

Could you please clarify your GPA? No one has a GPA with that range. We’re interested in your unweighted GPA and the rigor of your coursework. What are your standardized test scores?

I am looking for a college that has a good cognitive science, or neuroscience program. I hope to pay as little as possible, so a good that is generous with financial aid would be great, and one that is in CA. My GPA is about a 3.1 unweighted, but this is not including my senior year grades yet. I have not gotten my SAT scores yet, but I have taken a practice test and received a 1340, hoping for a better score on the real one though.

Your GPA and practice test scores are not encouraging for good merit aid. Let’s try the need-based aid route to college money, the one dependent upon family income. We need to know more about how much your parents are planning to offer you each of four years and if they are low or very low income.

Yeah, well, you are not likely to get any merit money. Are you a CA resident?

Are you saying you have 1340 out of 2400? That is usually thought not to be college ready as it is well below average. What’s up with that?

Yes, a 1340 out of 2400. I know my test scores are not what I would like them to be, but I will be taking it over again, and I really hopefully I would get a better score. I know my GPA is not the best, but I am trying a lot harder this year, this is my senior year, so I would hope my senior year grades (the grade I am in now) would be looked at as progress. My parents are willing to pay for a school that is more prestigious for my grades, and sat scores, but we still need financial aid as an option. I dont really know how much can be paid for, I think its something we would have to look after I was accepted from a school.

waiting til you’re accepted is too late. your parents need to understand that if you wait that long you might not be going to a 4yr college next year. Parents who won’t commit to a figure before the applications are put in need to come to their senses because they are going to have to commit soon thereafter. YOU need to know to make a good list of schools your family can afford. You are not going to a prestigious school, so this is another reason they need to commit now.

Perhaps it would help them if you sat down with them and ran the net price calculator for each school in which you’re interested. The NPC will produce an Expected Family Contribution for each school. This is what the school will expect them to pay whether they want to or not; it is the figure after all the need-based money is allocated to you (likely you won’t be getting merit). If you’re going to go to that school, you’ll have to have a plan for how to come up with that EFC or you won’t be going there. There’s no sense wasting app fees on schools you cannot afford.

Gently persuade your parents to talk about money. Do you have an ally in your mom? your dad? go to him or her first and speak calmly to them. Present yourself as a rational adult who needs some straight talk about family money.

@Lavender123: I plugged in your unweighted GPA 3.1 and current SAT score of 1340 into the SuperMatch feature for colleges in California with either a Cognitive or Neuroscience degree.

Here are the matches:
Cal State Stanislaus
Cal State Fresno
UC Merced

Unless you can get your SAT score above a 1500, your choices are limited. Since your are in-state you should be able to get good financial aid from these schools as long as you qualify. UC Merced would have the best research opportunities.

Your UC/CSU GPA is calculated based on your 10-11th grades only. Senior grades are not included.

There is always a CC for 2 years and then TAG or transfer.

Yeah I have been thinking about Community College then transferring, but I wanted to know all my options first. I have also been thinking about CSU Stanislaus and Merced lately. I appreciate your help. Thanks!
