Colleges you/child crossed off the list after visiting

It was on that weirdest list, but my favorite is the Fighting Okra of Delta State!

the NESCAC has some odd mascots
the Amherst Lord Jeffs, Colby White Mules, Conn. College Camels, Tufts Jumbos (elephants), and Williams Ephs. go figure.

I was always partial to the Battling Bishop of Ohio Wesleyan.

I like the Fighting Okra but it’s at the wrong school.

It should be at
wait for it
Okrahoma.

Williams is actually the Purple Cows - even stranger! And don’t forget the Polar Bears of Bowdoin.

Not a college mascot, but my HS’s official mascot is “The Force” (a lightning bolt) and the unofficial mascot is a TI-84 calculator. Yes, we are geeks and proud of it.

Scrotie made my 17 year old son laugh out loud. My husband & I were a bit disturbed by that costume, I must admit! ;)

As for colleges crossed off the list after visiting

UChicago: D wouldn’t even go on the tour after seeing the area. She said she’d be afraid to leave her dorm without a buddy.

Kenyon: D watched the students as they walked across campus. She felt that most avoided looking at the other students they passed. That really bothered her. She also felt that it was too isolated.

Rhodes: D loved the architecture, but she was very put off by the campus’s isolation from the surrounding area
although she certainly understood, as she felt that it would be very dangerous to go beyond the gates of the school.

She does like cities, and she is in Nashville now. She just needed the “right” city (for her).

The Redskins is the most blatantly offensive one to me
But, oh wait. Football teams have a lot of $$$, so they don’t have to care.

Ephs is the official nickname, but they use the Purple Cow as their “mascot” because it’s quite difficult to make a logo out of an “Eph” -short for Ephraim Williams

Well, there may be a different reason teams don’t call themselves the latter. I don’t think it’s out of cultural sensitivity. Good analogy, though. I can’t believe so many people don’t get this.

The purple cow is named Ephelia.

The same way that Yalies are sometimes called Elis after Elihu Yale - even though the official mascot is Bulldogs

"Kenyon: D watched the students as they walked across campus. She felt that most avoided looking at the other students they passed. That really bothered her.

Perception is such a funny thing
my son didn’t think he saw friendlier students at any of the 10 to 12 colleges he visited. It seems like everyone we saw on our 2 visits was saying “hey” and giving hugs (for girls) and at least nods of acknowledgment (for guys) when they passed each other. Now that he’s there, it seems impossible to avoid eye contact because the school is so small and close knit, every one seems to know everyone else!!! But ya know what, if that’s what someone “felt” when they were on campus, I’d say it’s a sign that it probably wasn’t the right school for that person. Really, you’re own “perception” is the only “reality” that matters, right? (I feel like that was a very “deep” statement I just made
)

China: I agree completely.

Yes China very deep  and really really true. The way we perceive things often makes them what they will be.

I looked at the lovely campus and our funny, bright, rumpled and quirky tour guide at Oxy and fell in love. DD just said
“yeah it’s pretty but I don’t need another pretty little campus on my list”

not quite
Williams has the situation reversed, unfortunately. They are officially the Ephs, but use a purple cow because you can’t really have an Eph “mascot” [New England Small College Athletic Conference](http://www.nescac.com/members/williams/info)

check out the unfortunate picture: [Williams College - Ephs stay hot, defeat Tufts 30-7](http://williams.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2009-10/News/10-24-09_vs._Tufts)

but back on topic, I agree that “feel” plays a very strong role. That may even be formed by chance, i.e. what people you randomly encounter, how your tour guide is, the weather, and what mood you’re in all play a role.

That picture is too funny.

We visited U of Rochester and went into a dorm during the tour. OMG, it was awful. Narrow tall cinderblock hallways with doors, all closed, along either side. Very grim. Looked just like a combo of mental hospital/jail/I don’t know what. Completely gave me the heebie-jeebies. No hanging out in the hallways in that dorm and socializing. Some of my best college times were hanging out in the halls with the room doors open and dueling stereos going. The entryway was completely unfriendly too. I can’t believe they thought it was a good idea to show this dorm to people.

Somebody told me that in the 60’s dorms were intentionally designed and built to discourage students from congregating. Well, they succeeded.

It took U of R off my list, but DS didn’t seem to care much. Doesn’t know any better, I guess.

Why is the picture unfortunate?

We used to sing acapella with the Dartmouth “Injunaires” and then they changed themselves to “Aires” when they dropped the Native American “mascot”.
