Colleges you/child crossed off the list after visiting

Last year my d toured tufts and hated it. did not like the admissions officer thought she was arrogant and the kids looked unhappy. she has a number of friends who attend this year and they love it. so who knows???

My son participated in a classics competition last weekend at Harvard, and he was interested in checking out the school while he was there. Unfortunately, the enormous amount of international tourists everywhere really gave a poor impression and made it difficult to see anything. Who knew that Harvard is a major tourist destination?

When we were there, there were many buses unloading tourists. We stayed with a friend who lives in a suburb and has a nephew there. He confirmed that is was like that all the time. Apparently if you take a bus tour of Boston ( like those double deck ones in NYC that are hop on, hop off), Harvard is a popular destination.

As a mom, I was glad that she could look beyond the name and based on the visit decide that she would not be happy there. And, she wants engineering which Harvard is not really known for at least for undergrads.

For the poster who’s girls did not like Tufts, did they check out Boston College? My daughter really liked BC’s campus, academics and sports culture. Its in a nice neighborhood and lots of kids go into Boston, or so we were told.

So is this Elon tearjerker admissions video on youtube?

quote.

I really liked Gtown’s info session. It gave us this sense of history and place about the school. But I’m a sucker for that.

Was also highly, highly impressed by the adcom from Mt Holyoke – speaking at a high level about what education is all about and what MH means.

I was impressed with the G’town info session & tour as well. Did it during D’s 10th grade. It wound up not being in the center of the bullseye for her but for a slightly different student, it would be. Moreover, I had a crushing sense of recognition that it was where I should have gone to school in Government instead of UCSB in Engineering. Ah, well
that’s why they made CC, right?

LOL - We highly enjoyed both our Gtown info session and tour guide (impressed enough that I emailed them with words of praise - this kid was by far the best tour guide we’ve had across a dozen or so colleges), and my D, who had no interest in Gtown and was just being dragged along for her twin brother’s interest, was drooling by the time we were done. I myself had been accepted at Gtown many, many years ago, and posted on my FB something along the lines of “Can someone tell me why I didn’t go here - what a fool I was”! The overall package of school and neighborhood was just really impressive; I couldn’t find anything even minor to fault. Too bad no one gets in these days!

Elon video - I have a copy. We saw it at the admissions presentation, but they also sent us a copy. So, a few months after visiting - I asked DH and DS if they wanted to watch it again to refresh our memories. They looked at me like I was crazy. But, I watched it again and found it just as moving the second time. It’s a good one.

Re: Tufts and post #1219

1) There is wireless in almost EVERY area of campus, save a few “deadspots.”
2) Student Center can be either “hushed” or quite bustling. Depends on when you visit.
3) So many things to do that do NOT have to do with the arts, that it would take pages and pages

4) Sports are, indeed, not a big thing at the school. If you’re looking for that “rah rah” spirit, do not go to Tufts. There is school spirit and pride in being a Jumbo and lots of TUFTS apparel, just not alot of support for the athletic teams.
5) Dinner with a prof on ne Saturday night out of the whole year sounds pretty good to me.
6) Boston is EXPENSIVE!!

CollegeMom08 - I totally agree with your comments however I was just stating why the group of kids didn’t like Tufts.

My dad made an interesting comment about Oberlin today in the car: of the 20+ colleges he’s visited with me, Oberlin was notable (a full year later) for the random faculty member–not even in my field of interest–who sat in Admissions to answer student/parent questions. It was a regular day, not an open house or anything, and he was impressed that professors would care enough to take time out of their schedule to be easily accessible to prospectives as well as actual students.

wheaton, IL all around not a good visit–and it was her top choice

Why not? Too religious?

I would think most visitors to Wheaton would know that it’s religious before scheduling a visit!

Okay, then
not religious enough? I’m genuinely curious. I’m under the impression that Wheaton is the best place in the world for evangelical Christians to get a real education and wonder what would make the visit a bad one.

I live fairly close to Wheaton College and employ a Wheaton grad at my office (who is a phenomenal young woman). Her husband, also a Wheaton grad, went to a top 14 law school out of Wheaton. It’s certainly an attractive, safe suburban setting and it has the academic cred among the non-evangelical folk – it will be interesting to know what the poster above didn’t like about Wheaton (or more accurately, what the daughter didn’t like).

In some regards, it’s almost a shame that it’s just an evangelical college, because Chicago could use a LAC of that size with good academic credentials.

I would assume that evangelicals are just as capable as agnostics of rejecting a school for reasons like the dining hall or the architecture or the dopey tour guide.

There’s another Wheaton in MA as well. Are we sure we’re talking about the same Wheaton?

I think the posters are aware of the very distinct differences between the Wheaton, Illinois college and Wheaton College, in Norton, Massachusetts.

Yes, her post above (#1232) specifically says “Wheaton, IL”. And her other posts are mostly in Christian college forums, so it’s a fair guess that she / daughter are looking for the Christian colleges.
