Sorry. Missed that. My bad. Didn’t mean to insult anyone.

look at where Wheaton is listed here in terms of SAT’s compared to other Christian Colleges:

Yes; it’s generally seen (at least by the non-evangelical world) as being the best of the Christian colleges (i.e., that it would be competitive and offers a real education). The Liberty one is quite interesting.

Our experience was exactly the same. The engineering info session was excellent, but the tour was lackluster and we never saw the vitality that we expected. Our D decided not to apply (although our younger one remains interested and may apply).

Our experience at Tufts was that although the tour was nothing special, the info session was probably one of the best we sat through. The speaker, an admissions officer (I wish I could remember his name) was funny, engaging, and also very helpful from essay writing (citing particular good and bad examples) to general philosophy during the college search process. He got a standing ovation when he was finished, and was immediately surrounded by students and parents who wanted more one-on-one time with him. D ultimately didn’t apply to the school but we were impressed with him.

Was your Tufts info session held in a big chapel? Ours was. It was several hundred people. The speaker rambled on about various neat things Tufts graduates had done – in really excruciating detail. It didn’t provide a lot of info about Tufts per se. Nonetheless, S liked it and that’s what counts.

Now I’m wondering what on Earth could be in an admissions video that makes people cry.

My S toured 3 of the colleges in the Claremont Consortium on the same day. Came away liking Mudd and Pomona, but really disliked Claremont McKenna. The reason? He thought the kids on the tour with him were jerks (he actually used a much more derogatory term that I won’t repeat). While thats not really a fair thing to hold against a school, I haven’t tried to change his mind because I do think the school’s pre-professional focus will not suit him.

Okay here is the Elon video link:

[YouTube - Elon University: Explore, Dream, Discover](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMEAq-wlu9A)

I’m not sure the small screen does it justice. To get tears, you might need to be female and sitting next to your child.

Actually, that Elon link is only a 3 minute excerpt. The full thing is about 10 minutes long, they offer to send it on DVD when you get accepted. It didn’t make me cry until D was accepted there ED and I knew it was where she’d be spending the next 4 years. Then it got me.

Hands down I think its the best college intro DVD I’ve ever seen (the DVD that they show at the info sessions).

It starts with a shot of blue sky with fluffy white clouds and a steeple from Elon’s campus. Then these words show on the screen, with some quiet music and a tolling bell in the background:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. - Mark Twain"

Funny, I wasn’t sure it was the same, but it seemed so familiar. I thought it was longer, but I only saw it once and who knows with my memory. I looked on their website and didn’t see it anywhere. Too bad. I guess you will all need to tour Elon to see the whole thing.

kolijma: Could that be Admissions Dan?

Dan was the person who led our Tufts info session. He was a hoot.

BCandBU, the shorter version of the Elon video on Youtube does give a pretty good flavor of the whole video.

The Tufts guy - I believe that he had graduated from an Ivy League and might have mentioned that he was gay, but I don’t remember his name. wow - I did tear up at the short Elon video, and it did its job. I immediately googled info about the school. too bad I don’t have any more kids at home to help find colleges for!

Our Tufts session was in a windowless room with tiered seats that was too wide and not deep enough. Proportions were weird. (Sorry the architect in me!) I don’t think the guy was Dan. I believe he went to Bowdoin, he seemed very preppy. We didn’t care for him, but liked everything else about Tufts. He talked a lot about how you should think about “Why you were going to college” like it was some big philosophical question.

Interesting about the Elon video, because my d and I went to an info session where the video was shown and decided the school seemed too touchy-feely for her (and me).

“Dan was the person who led our Tufts info session. He was a hoot.”

Here are the Tufts admissions officers:

fendrock: that’s why there are thousands of colleges around the country for all types of people…

Thanks for the visual ClarkAlum. After looking at the pictures I think it was David, but please don’t quote me. At least David starts with a D. So, is Dan not a hoot?
