For the first 30 minutes of yesterday's season opener, the shooters on the Navy men's lacrosse team peppered Saint Joseph's sophomore goalie Erik Hotaling, but he kept getting in the way. Once the No. 10 Midshipmen started to solve their nemesis, they cruised by their overmatched opponent.

Junior attackman Nick Mirabito scored a game-high three goals, all in the second half, and Navy's hustling defense allowed no goals after halftime, as the Mids rolled to a 10-3 rout at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium....

Perhaps having the first goal of the season scored by a freshman is a good omen for the Navy men's lacrosse team. Despite a lengthy lull following Basil Daratsos' goal with just a little more than one minute elapsed in the game against St. Joseph's University, coach Richie Meade's Mids came on strong in the second half and rolled to a 10-3 victory....

Terrific home opener for the Mids.... and two goals for returning Dingman, and a goal each for two plebes!!!! They ALL did a fantastic job, from face offs to defense...midfield to attack....

Congrats to the JV team as well, who came on strong in their sub-zero opener on Friday night, beating their opponent 21 to 1.....

GO NAVY!! :)

Those close to the yard: Navy JV lax takes on Bates College tonight on Rip Miller Field- face off at 7pm.... should be a good one!!!

Senior Colin Finnegan and sophomore Geoff Leone are first-time Patriot League award winners.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior goalkeeper Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.) and second-year defensive midfielder Geoff Leone (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned recognition from the Patriot League office Tuesday afternoon as both players were named to the league's list of men's lacrosse players of the week. Finnegan took home goalkeeper-of the week kudos, while Leone was named the league's defensive player of the week.

Making his first-collegiate start, Finnegan stopped a career-best nine shots against Saint Joseph's last Saturday en route to picking up his first win as Navy's net-minder. Finnegan has seen action in 13 games over his four seasons, including Navy's 2004 NCAA Championship contest against Syracuse.

Leone, meanwhile, has played in every contest for the Mids over the last two seasons as a member of Navy's traditionally-strong defensive unit. He helped spearhead Navy's defensive efforts in the middle of the field in its season opener against the Hawks, while his pass aided Ian Dingman's (Deferiet, N.Y.) goal to open the third quarter. It marked Leone's first point in a Blue & Gold uniform. Leone also helped the Mids' defense keep Saint Joseph's to just three goals, marking the 15th time in the last 16 games that Navy's defense has kept its opponent to fewer than 10 goals.

The ninth-ranked (USILA) Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Easton, Pa., where they will face Lafayette in both team's Patriot League opener. Action is set for 1:00 pm at Rappolt Field.

Balanced Attack Leads Navy Lacrosse to 9-4 Win Over Lafayette
EASTON, PA. - Six different players scored goals, while an additional pair added assists to the lead the 10th-ranked Navy lacrosse team (2-0) to a 9-4 victory over Lafayette (0-2) Saturday afternoon at Rappolt Field in Easton, Pa. The Midshipmen are now 3-1 in Patriot League openers, including 2-0 against the Leopards.

The Midshipmen scored the first three goals of the game, including a quick strike by senior Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) who scored the first of his two goals on the afternoon just 2:12 in the contest. Navy tacked on a goal at 7:56 when Ian Dingman's (Deferiet, N.Y.) shot was deflected by Lafayette keeper Jeff Canfield and starting attack Bruce Nechanicky (Montgomery Village, Md.) was on the door step to pick up the loose ball and fire it over Canfield's left shoulder.

Navy held a 2-0 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and held a decisive 17-1 advantage in shots, including seven on goal.

Just over a minute into the second quarter, Navy extended its lead behind a goal by senior middie Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) who tucked in his first score of the season.

The Leopards finally got on the board with a goal by junior attack Andrew Horton at 11:58, as he wrapped around the right side of the goal to fire in a shot at Navy keeper Colin Finnegan's (Arnold, Md.) ankles. A minute later, Lafayette trimmed Navy's lead to one as rookie Steve Serling attacked from the left side of the cage and scored his first-collegiate goal.

Navy, however, answered at 9:42 when Looney fired a bullet from 10 yards out that grazed Canfield's left shoulder and rippled the net. Neither team scored in the final nine minutes of the half, as the Mids held a 4-2 decision after 30 minutes of action.

The Mids opened the second half by scoring back-to-back goals, including the first of three goals by Dingman on the day. Dingman bulled his way in to within three yards and powered in an unassisted goal at the 8:09 mark. Just minutes later, Lafayette was called for a slash, setting up an extra-man strike by senior William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) from Nechanicky.

Lafayette answered with nearly four minutes remaining in the quarter when newcomer Chris Prudhomme produced his first-collegiate goal on an unassisted strike. Like Lafayette did for Navy earlier in the quarter, the Mids did for the Leopards, as a trip by Jaren Woeppel (Camillus, N.Y.) gave Lafayette a man-up opportunity. The Leopards made good on it as Horton fed junior attack Mike Meirowitz to cut the Navy lead to 6-4.

Navy went on to score the final three goals of the game, including a pair by Dingman who became only the eighth player in program history to reach 150-career points. Additionally, he now paces the team with 17 hat tricks during his career. Dingman's final goal, scored with 2:49 remaining on an extra-man strike, was assisted by junior attack Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.), who extended his streak of posting a goal or an assist to 33-consecutive games.

The Mids finished the game with a 34-19 advantage in shots and were two of four on extra-man opportunities. Navy's Wallace, Mikelis Visgauss (Setauket,, N.Y.) and Dan Decker (Randallstown, Md.) once again combined to win 12 of the 18 face-offs. Finnegan made six stops in goal for the Mids, including three in the second quarter.

The Midshipmen return to action next Friday evening when they play host to North Carolina (2-0). Action is set for 7:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. The voice of Navy lacrosse Pete Medhurst will call the game live on 1430 WNAV.

Navy men's lacrosse coach Richie Meade doesn't want to hear about Lafayette's record from last year.

It doesn't matter to Meade that the Leopards - who host the Mids today at 1 p.m. -were 2-10 last season and 8-45 the last four years under coach Terry Mangan. What Meade is concentrating on is the 23 returning letterman back this season and a young team he thinks is poised to make some noise in the Patriot League this year....

Weekend Upsets Leave Mids Outside of Top 10

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Back-to-back weeks filled with upsets galore have sent shockwaves through the lacrosse community and have resulted in varying opinions on who exactly are the top 20 teams in Div. I men's lacrosse. And while Navy improved its record to 2-0 after a 9-4 victory at Lafayette in its Patriot League opener last Saturday, the USILA Coaches Poll pushed the Mids out of the top 10 and into the No. 12 spot, while the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll rewarded Navy as its No. 8 team.

Two weeks ago, Drexel left the defending National Champions and top-ranked team Virginia dead in its tracks with an 11-10 victory. Last Friday, Army stunned Syracuse at the Dome and a day later, Albany picked off No. 1-ranked Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. It's no surprise that the recent results have the coaches and media stumbling in their early picks for their respective polls. The USILA Coaches Poll has named Georgetown (1-0) its top team, followed by Duke (2-0), Princeton (1-0), Cornell (1-0) and 3-0 North Carolina who did not appear in the preseason poll. The media believe Princeton is the best team in the country, as they awarded the Tigers nine of the 15 first-place votes. Georgetown is ranked second, followed by Duke, Cornell and Virginia (1-1) who battered Stony Brook, 15-7, over the weekend.

Navy began the season ranked No. 9 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, but dropped to No. 10 a week ago. Meanwhile, the Mids were No. 9 in the USILA Coaches Preseason Poll but fell back in the first installment of the regular-season rankings.

Entering the season, five of Navy's 12 regular-season opponents were ranked in the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Top 25 Poll. This week, five are among the nation's top 20 according to the USILA Coaches Poll, including four in the top 10 - Georgetown (1), North Carolina (5), Maryland (6), Johns Hopkins (9) and Army (13).

The Mids will be back in action on Friday when they play host to nationally-ranked North Carolina in a game brought to you by STX. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Single-game tickets may be purchased at the Navy Ticket Office on Brownson Road, by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or via the internet at <a href="http://www.navysports.com%5B/url%5D">www.navysports.com</a>. Tickets can also be bought on game day at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Tickets prices are $7 for adults and $3 for students. A special group rate for parties of 20 or more is offered by calling the Navy Marketing Office at 410-293-8712. In addition, there is a $5 charge to park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

• Meeting for the 12th-consecutive year, the Mids are looking to win their fifth-straight game against the Tar Heels.
• The series is split at 10 wins apiece with Navy holding a 7-3 advantage in games played in Annapolis, including two-straight wins.
• Five of the last seven games in the series have been decided by one goal, while four contests during that span have gone into overtime.
• Junior attack Nick Mirabito has scored a goal or dealt out an assist in all 33 games in which he has played.
• Navy has given up double-figure goals just once in its last 17 games and three times in the last 33 contests.
• A Navy player has produced a hat trick in each of its first two contests.
• 10 different players have scored goals for Navy, seven different players have produced assists - a total of 11 players have turned in a goal or an assist.

Navy vs. North Carolina - The Series
• In one of themost lop-sided games in recent memory, Navy evened the series at 10 wins apiece after producing an 11-3 victory at North Carolina last March.
• This is the 12th-consecutive season the two teams have met ... the inaugural meeting was in 1975 when the Mids earned an 11-4 win in Annapolis
• The Midshipmen have won four in a row against the Tar Heels and are going for a series-record (Navy) five straight.
• Navy owns a 7-3 record in games played in Annapolis, including two-straight wins.

• Five of the last seven games in the series have been decided by one goal, while four contests during that span have gone into overtime.

Recapping Last Year's Meeting
• Preseason All-American Jon Birsner scored three goals and added a pair of assists to lead seventh-ranked Navy to an 11-3 victory over No. 14 North Carolina at Fetzer Field.
• Navy used a combination of bullish offense and disciplined defense to claim its fourth-consecutive win over the Tar Heels. While the series is now knotted up at 10 wins apiece, it marks just the third win by the Mids in Chapel Hill and the first time they have earned back-to-back wins in the Tar Heel state.
• UNC took an early 1-0 advantage, as rookie midfielder Bobby McAuley scored just 43 seconds into the game despite being crushed by defenseman Brendan Teague. Navy regrouped and a goal by senior All-American midfielder Steve Looney sparked a 5-0 run by the Mids, including goals by Birsner and another by Looney just seven seconds apart (1:59, 1:52) at the end of the opening quarter.
• With Navy leading 5-1 with 13 minutes to play in the second quarter, Carolina's Bart Wagner found Kyle Henderson who momentarily stopped Navy's run. Birsner, however, gave Navy a 6-2 lead heading into the half, as he scored at the 2:36 mark.
• The Mids opened the third quarter by scoring five-consecutive goals, including two by All-American attack Ian Dingman, who drilled a team-high four goals on the day.
• Face-off specialist William Wallace won 10 of the 16 draws he took. He also earned his first assist of the season after winning the draw following Birsner's goal and feeding Looney for the Mids' fourth goal of the game.
• On the defensive side of the field, the Mids held UNC to 12 shots on goal with senior All-American keeper Matt Russell registering nine saves.

Navy Men's Lax Dismantles Fifth-Ranked North Carolina, 19-8

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Seventeen different players produced a goal or an assist to lead the 12th-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team (3-0) to a 19-8 route over No. 5 North Carolina (3-1) Friday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It's the most goals scored by Navy against a nationally-ranked team since handing 18th-ranked Army a 19-9 setback on April 7, 1990.

The Mids' 19 goals are the most they have scored in the 21-game series, improving upon the previous record of 16 set in 1978. Additionally, the 11-goal win is Navy's largest margin of victory in the series, bettering last year's eight-goal decision in Chapel Hill. The Mids now own a one-game advantage in the series, leading 11-10, while Navy's five-game winning streak against the Tar Heels is the longest in the series by the Midshipmen.

"We knew that North Carolina was a good team, but we realized that we needed to take away what they do well," said Navy junior attack Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.), who extended his consecutive games streak with a goal or an assist to 34.

"We played with a lot of intensity from the beginning and I thought we were very prepared on both sides of the field," said Navy head coach Richie Meade, a Carolina graduate. "We had a number of people tell us that North Carolina is great in transition and that was probably a good assessment, but I felt like we could run. We did a good job of running the field and our midfield was good tonight.

"This is a tough place to play," added Meade. "We play in what I believe is the finest lacrosse facility in the country and we have great support from the community and the student-body. Once you get behind in this kind of atmosphere, sometimes the game just gets away from you. I feel good for our players with the result tonight."

Attackmen Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) and Mirabito paced the Mids with their second hat tricks of the season, while Mirabito tacked on an assist to lead the team with four points. Rookies Basil Daratsos (Niskayuna, N.Y.), Patrick Moran (Annapolis, Md.) and Tim Paul (Parkton, Md.), along with senior middie Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) each pitched in a pair of goals for the Mids, while additional players recorded goals on the evening. Leading the way for North Carolina was sophomore midfielder Ben Hunt who scored three first-half goals, while freshman middie Sean Burke turned in a pair of goals and assists to pace the Tar Heels.

The Mids scored back-to-back goals just 47 seconds apart to take an early 2-0 lead 5:08 into the contest and never looked back as Navy never trailed in the game. The Tar Heels closed to within one on three different occasions, including by junior midfielder Brian Connors with just 11 ticks remaining in the opening period. Navy, though, dashed any momentum North Carolina had gained, as a Wallin fired in his second goal of the game off an assist from junior Matt Guido (North Caldwell, N.J.) with just one second left in the period.

The Mids and Tar Heels traded goals early in the second period, but Daratsos' unassisted marker at 7:54 sparked a 5-0 run for the Mids. Daratsos and Paul scored just 43 seconds apart in the third quarter, while Mirabito and Dingman battered Carolina keeper Grant Zimmerman with back-to-back scores just 16 seconds apart in the third quarter.

North Carolina finally stopped the Mids' run at the 6:27 mark in the third with a Nick Tintle-to-Bart Wagner score. However, Mirabito's third goal of the game at the 3:43 mark once again ignited a Navy run that pushed the Mids' lead to 18-6 and featured first-career goals by senior long stick defensive midfielder Victor Barger (Clifton Park, N.Y.), freshman attack Kyle Kapron (Chandler, Ariz.) and back-to-back goals by Moran.

Carolina scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the game, while Greg Clement (Dallas, Texas) put one last goal up on the board for the Mids with 51 seconds remaining in Navy's win.

One of the reasons Navy was put in goal-scoring position was because of the play of its face-off team. Six different players took draws for the Mids, including junior Mikelis Visgauss (Setauket,, N.Y.) who won 11 of the 15 face-offs he took, while senior William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) won four and Dan Decker (Randallstown, Md.) grabbed three.

Senior Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.) played a fantastic game in goal for the Midshipmen, making a career-high 14 saves, while giving up seven of the eight goals. Second-year keeper Matt Coughlin (Brightwaters, N.Y.) came in to play the final 2:35 of the game where he made one save and gave up the game's final goal with two seconds left. The Navy defense held North Carolina under its 12.3 goals per game average and for the 17th time in the last 18 games, it has held its opponent under double digits.

It was this game just four years ago that turned around the career of 2006 grad Matt Russell in goal, as well as the 2004 campaign that sent the Midshipmen to the National Championship game. Finnegan's performance was certainly a confidence builder.

"I thought tonight was the chance for our defense to step up and prove that we can play against a top team like North Carolina," said Finnegan. If you give North Carolina an uncontested shot, they are going to score because they are great shooters. Our defense did a great job of getting at their hands. I had confidence coming into the game, but there's no doubt that tonight has helped my confidence, as well."

The Midshipmen return to action next Saturday when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to square off against Patriot League foe Lehigh. Action is set for 1:00 pm at Ulrich Field and will be carried live on 1430 WNAV with the voice of Navy lacrosse Pete Medhurst calling the action.

Total destruction.

That's the only way to describe what Navy did to North Carolina in last night's early-season lacrosse showdown.

The Midshipmen dominated every facet of the game and unleashed a surprising offensive onslaught in posting their most lopsided victory in 21 meetings with the Tar Heels....

terrific game.... total destruction just about sums it up.... not a doubt that Navy will be right back in the top 10 come Monday! Great Job USNA!!!! Thanks for an exciting game!!!

Richie Meade Named US Lacrosse Coach of the Week

BALTIMORE, Md. - After orchestrating the Mids' 19-8 rout over fifth-ranked and previously unbeaten North Carolina last Friday, 13th-year Navy lacrosse coach Richie Meade has been named the US Lacrosse Coach of the Week for the weekend ending March 4. Meade, along with Maryland women's lacrosse coach Cathy Reese, will be recognized on the CSTV broadcasts of The First Four this weekend from San Diego.

Seventeen different Midshipmen produced a goal or an assist to lead then No. 12 Navy to a 19-8 route over No. 5 North Carolina at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It's the most goals scored by Navy since ringing up 23 against Holy Cross in 2004 and the most against a nationally-ranked team since handing 18th-ranked Army a 19-9 setback on April 7, 1990.

The Mids' 19 goals are the most they have scored in the 21-game series, improving upon the previous record of 16 set in 1978. Additionally, the 11-goal win is Navy's largest margin of victory in the series, bettering last year's eight-goal decision in Chapel Hill.

Defensively, senior keeper Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.) produced a career-high 14 saves, the most stoppers by a Navy goalkeeper since All-American Matt Russell warded off 14 shots on goal by Georgetown in 2004.

It's the second-consecutive year in which Meade has been lauded for his efforts by US Lacrosse. Last April he was tagged the coach of the week after leading the Midshipmen to a 7-6 victory over fourth-ranked Maryland in College Park.

Navy returns to action Saturday when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa. to face Patriot League foe Lehigh. Action is set for 1:00 pm with the Voice of Navy Lacrosse, Pete Medhurst, calling the action on 1430 WNAV.
