Navy Defensive Duo Picks Up Patriot League Recognition

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For the second time in the last three weeks, two members of Navy's defense have received player of the week recognition from the Patriot League. Senior Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.) was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, while senior captain Andrew Dow (Hauppauge, N.Y.) claimed Patriot League Defensive Player-of-the-Week kudos for the week ending March 4.

Finnegan was sensational in goal last Friday night where his career-high 14-save performance helped lead Navy to a 19-8 victory over fifth-ranked North Carolina at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The 14 saves are the most by a Navy keeper since three-time All-American Matt Russell made 14 stops against fourth-ranked Georgetown en route to a 7-5 win by the Midshipmen. Finnegan, who gave up seven of the Tar Heels' eight goals, has been named the league's goalkeeper of the week twice this season, also winning the inaugural award on Feb. 20.

Along with Finnegan, Dow helped anchor Navy's defense that held North Carolina to eight goals, four under its average of 12.3 per contest. Dow, in particular, played a major role as he was matched up with the Tar Heels' leading goal scorer, Gavin Petracca, who came into the game having scored a team-best seven goals. At the end of the night, Petracca was held to just four shots, two on goal, and none that found the back of the net.

The sixth-ranked Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., where they will face Lehigh in a Patriot League contest. Action is set for 1:00 pm at Ulrich Field.

So....more snow at USNA.... and JV game for tonight postponed till tomorrow....

Game Preview
• Navy (3-0 overall, 1-0 Patriot League) will look to push its winning streak to four in a row when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Lehigh (2-2, 1-0) in a Patriot League battle ... action is set for 1:00 pm at Ulrich Sports Complex.
• The Midshipmen are coming off a 19-8 victory over fifth-ranked North Carolina last Friday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ... 17 different players had a hand in the Mids 19 goals.
• Lehigh is coming off a 9-8 overtime victory against league foe Holy Cross last Saturday in Worcester, Mass. ... the Mountain Hawks scored an 8-6 victory over Drexel at home on Feb. 24, just a week after the Dragons upset the defending National Champion Virginia Cavaliers.
• Saturday's contest will air live on 1430 WNAV with Pete Medhurst calling the action.

Navy Quick Hits
• The Mids are looking to start the season with a 4-0 record for the second-consecutive year and only the third in Richie Meade's 13 seasons as head coach.
• Having lost only once in the 25-game history with Lehigh, the Mids are looking to extend their winning streak to 22 in a row.
• Navy's only loss to Lehigh in the series was in 1913, a 4-3 Mountain Hawks decision in Annapolis.
• Lehigh has topped five goals just twice in the series ... the Mids have scored six or more goals in 17-straight games against Lehigh and in 20 of the 25 contests.
• Navy's Ian Dingman has scored three goals in each of the three games in which he has played against Lehigh.
• Junior attack Nick Mirabito has scored a goal or dealt out an assist in all 34 games in which he has played.
• Navy has given up double-figure goals just once in its last 18 games and three times in the last 34 contests.
• A Navy player has produced a hat trick in each of its first three contests - Ian Dingman twice, Nick Mirabito.
• 15 different players have scored goals for Navy, 10 different players have produced assists - a total of 18 players have turned in a goal or an assist.
• 17 different players had a hand in the Mids' 19-8 win over North Carolina ... 11 scored goals and another 6 produced assists.

Going for 4-0 Start
• Since the NCAA became the governing body of lacrosse in 1971, Navy has opened the season with a 4-0 record just nine times, including twice since 1990.
• A win over Lehigh would give Navy a 4-0 record for the second-consecutive season and the first time the program has put together back-to-back 4-0 starts since 1986 and '87 ... in 1986, the Mids won their first eight games and the following year they won five in a row.
• Navy is one of 11 teams (of 56) that is unbeaten in '07 ... it is also one of three Patriot League schools yet to suffer a defeat ... joining the Midshipmen are Albany (2-0), Army (4-0), Bucknell (4-0), Cornell (3-0), Delaware (5-0), Duke (4-0), Fairfield (2-0), Georgetown (2-0), Towson (2-0) and Yale (2-0).

Navy vs. Lehigh - The Series
• Navy owns a 24-1 all-time series advantage against Lehigh, with its only loss suffered in 1913 ... since that setback, Navy has won 21-consecutive games.
• Saturday's contest marks only the fourth game in the series played on Lehigh's home field ... the Mids are 3-0 in games played in Bethlehem and have outscored the Mountain Hawks, 30-10, in those contests.
• Navy hasn't allowed Lehigh to score more than seven goals in the series and has held the Mountain Hawks to five or fewer goals 23 times in the 25 games.
• Since joining the Patriot League in 2004, Navy owns a 5-0 record against Lehigh, winning the five games by a combined margin of 55-24, including a 9-2 victory last April in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament.

Scoring Streaks
• Navy junior Nick Mirabito has produced a goal or an assist in every game in which he has played ... it's a streak of 34-consecutive games.
• Senior Ian Dingman has scored a goal in six-straight games ... the last time he was held without a goal was in last year's Johns Hopkins contest.

Meade Named US Lacrosse Coach of the Week
• After orchestrating the Mids' 19-8 rout over fifth-ranked and previously unbeaten North Carolina, 13th-year Navy lacrosse coach Richie Meade was named the US Lacrosse Men's Coach of the Week.
• Seventeen different Midshipmen produced a goal or an assist to lead then No. 12 Navy to a 19-8 route over No. 5 North Carolina at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
• It's the most goals scored by Navy since ringing up 23 against Holy Cross in 2004 and the most against a nationally-ranked team since handing 18th-ranked Army a 19-9 setback on April 7, 1990.
• It's the second-consecutive year in which Meade has been lauded for his efforts by US Lacrosse ... last April he was tagged the coach of the week after leading the Midshipmen to a 7-6 victory over fourth-ranked Maryland in College Park.

With a string of upsets and the return of Duke's program dominating the headlines early on in this college lacrosse season, Navy quietly went about its business in winning its first two games.

Then last Friday, Navy made the rest of the country take notice in a big way as 17 players contributed a goal or assist in its 19-8 victory Saturday against then-No. 5 North Carolina. The win helped the Midshipmen go from 12th to sixth in this week's USILA coaches poll....

Sixth-Ranked Navy Lax Remains Unbeaten at 4-0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team scored eight-consecutive goals, seven in the second quarter, to rally back from an early 3-0 deficit and defeat Patriot League foe Lehigh, 9-5, Saturday afternoon at Urlich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pa. Six different players scored goals for the Midshipmen as Navy improved to 4-0 on the year, including a 2-0 record in Patriot League action.

"I thought that we struggled to finish off some of our shots today, but I was impressed with our players keeping their composure and battling back," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "Defensively, we did a pretty good job. Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.) had another solid game in goal for us and Jordan DiNola (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) did a great job of covering Alec Hooff, who was a First-Team All-Patriot League midfielder last year."

The Midshipmen were led by senior midfielder Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) who picked up his first hat trick of the season, while becoming the third different player this season who has pitched in three-plus goals in a game for Navy. Fellow first-line midfielder senior Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) turned in a pair of goals and added an assist, while attackmen Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Bruce Nechanicky (Montgomery Village, Md.) each scored a goal and assisted on a pair. Stephen Marino paced Lehigh with a pair of goals, while Matthew Diehl, Chris Linko and Ricky Cornetta each scored.

Shots were few and far between in the opening quarter as the two teams combined for just 10. It wasn't until the 3:11 mark that either team got a solid shot off, as Lehigh rookie Chris Linko curled around the left side and poked in his first-collegiate goal to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Jeff Wiener fed Marino who took a shot from five yards out on the left side of the goal, sliding it just over Finnegan's shoulder to the far side of the net. The Mountain Hawks pushed their lead to three when Cornetta came around the left side of the goal and literally rolled the ball past short stick defensive midfielder Geoff Leone (Massapequa, N.Y.) with just under a minute to play in the opening quarter.

Just as time ran out in the first quarter, Lehigh's Kevin Houk was called for pushing, setting up the Mids for their second extra-man opportunity of the day. Navy took 26 seconds to set up the goal they need as Wallin fed Looney for a 10-yard power shot up the middle. That goal was the first of eight in a row for the Mids, including seven straight in the second quarter.

For the second-straight game, Navy long stick defensive midfielder Victor Barger (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored a goal as Nechanicky fed Barger in transition who got off a left-handed shot and his second-collegiate goal.

Two of the most impressive plays of the day came at the end of the run. Wallin scored his second of the day when we whipped a shot from behind the back thanks to a feed from rookie middie Basil Daratsos (Niskayuna, N.Y.) with just 32 seconds left in the opening half.

Navy's final goal in the run was scored with 5:37 remaining in the third quarter as Leone precisely threw an outlet pass from near his own defensive goal to Terence Higgins (Chappaqua, N.Y.) who was just inside the offensive box who then found Nechanicky for the score.

After more than a 35-minute scoring drought, Lehigh put its fourth goal on the board as Marino shot up the gut as he was spinning to the middle of the field. The Mountain Hawks scored off a Navy error at the 8:53 mark in the fourth quarter as Diehl intercepted a pass by Finnegan and popped the ball right back into the net.

The Mids scored their final goal of the game when Looney exposed Lehigh's 10-man ride and tossed a 40-yard shot from the left side into an empty goal.

Both teams finished the contest with 35 shots, while the Mids claimed the ground ball war with a 32-25 advantage. Navy won 10 of the 17 face-offs with senior William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) taking eight of the 11 draws he took. Finnegan played an impressive second half where he made 12 of his career-high tying 14 saves.

Navy will have little time to reflect upon its win, as the Midshipmen will be back in action on Tuesday when they play host to Canisius in a nonconference matchup. Game time is slated for 10:00 am at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

DiNola Named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy junior defenseman Jordan DiNola (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the nationally-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team to its fourth-consecutive win over the weekend, a 9-5 victory over Patriot League foe Lehigh. DiNola is the third different player to earn defensive player of the week kudos this spring, joining Geoff Leone (Massapequa, N.Y.) and team captain Andrew Dow (Hauppauge, N.Y.).

DiNola and his teammates held Lehigh scoreless for better than 35 minutes to boost the Mids record to 2-0 in conference action. After Lehigh scored the opening three goals, the Mountain Hawks experienced a scoring drought that began with a minute left in the opening quarter until nearly five minutes into the fourth stanza. Meanwhile, Navy scored eight unanswered goals, including seven in the second quarter to secure the win.

DiNola shadowed First-Team All-Patriot League midfielder Alec Hooff all afternoon, who entered the game as the Mountain Hawks' leading assist producer. DiNola held Hooff without a point, as the Mids held their 18th opponent in the last 19 games to single digit goals.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Tuesday when they play host to Canisius in a nonconference matchup. Game time is slated for 10:00 am at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Seven-Goal Third Quarter Ignites Navy Lax to 13-5 Win Over Canisius

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.), Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) and Bruce Nechanicky (Montgomery Village, Md.) each produced a hat trick to lead the fifth-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team to a 13-5 victory over Canisius (0-3) Tuesday morning at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Mids are off to a 5-0 start for the second-straight season and only the second time in the last 18 years.

While Dingman, Looney and Nechanicky paced the Mids with three goals apiece, junior attack Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) pitched in a pair of goals and assists, while newcomer Basil Daratsos (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and junior Matt Guido (North Caldwell, N.J.) scored once. Looney led all scorers, adding a pair of assists for his first-collegiate five-point contest. Five different players scored for Canisius, including senior attack Kevin Ross who led the Golden Griffins with a goal and an assist.

Canisius looked to take the early lead in the game when attack Michael Blocho wrapped around the left side of the goal and sent a shot past Navy keeper Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.). The goal, however, was waived off after the official's checked Blocho's stick and ruled it illegal, sending him to the sideline to serve a three-minute unreleasable penalty. Despite multiple shots, Navy was unable to take advantage of the penalty.

Navy finally got on the scoreboard at the 6:37 mark in the first quarter when Dingman curled around the left side of the cage and stuck in the game's first goal. The Navy lead, however, would be short-lived, as Ross answered for Canisius 33 seconds later, as he, too, came around the left side of the goal to sneak in a shot.

The Golden Griffins took their only lead of the contest at 2-1 when Brad Favero sent a bouncer from 10 yards out on the right side into the net with four minutes to go. Nechanicky evened the score with just seven ticks remaining in the opening stanza, as he found the back of the net from five yards out.

"The first quarter in particular was a possession game," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "I think we were pretty sloppy in the early stages of the game. We had our chance to score, but didn't, and I don't think we handled the three-minute penalty very well either."

Navy took a 3-2 lead when Looney hooked up with Mirabito for an extra-man strike at 6:22 in the second period. Unable to shake the Golden Griffins, rookie Michael Benzinger sent a shot from 10 yards out on the left side of the goal to the upper right-hand corner to post his first-collegiate goal.

The Mids, however, would take a 4-3 lead going into the half as Mirabito scored in transition off an assist from junior middie Terence Higgins (Chappaqua, N.Y.). That score would be the first of six unanswered goals for the Midshipmen, as they led Canisius 9-3 with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter.

Navy went on to give up one goal in each of the final two quarters to seal the victory.

"We had the chance to pull away a couple of times, but we just weren't able to do it," added Meade. "I think we did a good job of coming out in the third quarter and re-establishing the pace of the game. We struggled with face-offs in the first half, but (assistant coach) Ryan Moran was able to adjust what we do and did a better job."

Navy won just two of the nine face-offs in the opening half, but came back to claim eight of the 13 second-half draws. For the game, the Mids were 10 for 22 with William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) finding the most success at 6 for 11.

In addition to the possession game, the Mids also found the clearing game to be a struggle.

"I felt like some of their early goals were a result of our inability to clear the ball," said Meade. "It's not something we've had a great deal of trouble with this year, but we got a little careless and it cost us."

Navy's defense came through once again, anchored by Finnegan who played another stellar game in goal where he made 10 saves, including seven in the second period.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Dallas, Texas to face Patriot League foe Holy Cross (1-4, 0-3 PL) in a neutral site match-up at SMU's Ford Stadium beginning at 12:00 pm CDT. The Voice of Navy Lacrosse Pete Medhurst will call the game live on 1430 WNAV.

This wasn't a matinee, it was brunch. Navy started its mid-week matchup with visiting Canisius at 10 a.m. yesterday and the result was predictable. The heavily favored Midshipmen slept-walked through the first half and allowed the highly motivated Golden Griffins to gain confidence.

Turnovers, missed shots and an inability to win faceoffs hampered the Mids, who entered intermission leading by just one goal....

Navy Men's Lacrosse Among Top 5 in Pair of Polls

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the fourth-consecutive season, the Navy men's lacrosse program has received a top-five ranking, as it is the No. 5 team in this week's USILA Coaches Poll and No. 4 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The undefeated Midshipmen (5-0) came from behind to defeat Patriot League foe Lehigh, 9-5, last Saturday, while this week is off to a positive start after putting away Canisius, 13-5, Tuesday morning.

For the fourth-consecutive week, the No. 1 team in the nation has been knocked off. This time it was Loyola (2-2) nipping Duke (4-1) in San Diego last Saturday night, clearing the way for Cornell (4-0) to take over the top spot. The Big Red received six of the 15 first-place votes in the media poll, while grabbing 10 of the 12 nods in the coaches poll. Albany (3-0) is the coaches' pick for the No. 2 spot, while the media poll still has the Great Danes outside of its top five (No. 6). Rounding out the top five in the coaches poll is Johns Hopkins (3-1), Duke and Navy, who a week ago was the No. 6 team. The media gave Virginia (4-1) seven first-place votes, but was seven points shy of Cornell's point total as the Cavs settle in at No. 2. Johns Hopkins is No. 3, while Navy picked up a pair of first-place votes and is the No. 4 team, followed by Duke at No. 5.

Entering the season, five of Navy's 12 regular-season opponents were ranked in the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Top 25 Poll. This week, six are among the nation's top 20 according to the USILA Coaches Poll, including three in the top 10 - Johns Hopkins (3), Georgetown (7), Army (9), Bucknell (T-11), Maryland (T-11) and North Carolina (13). League foe Colgate is just outside the top 20, as it has received votes in each of the last two weeks.

Navy Defense Back in '07
• Since 2000, Navy's defense has been ranked No. 1 in the country three times, including each of the last two seasons ... heading into the weekend, the Mids stand No. 1, giving up 5.0 goals per game.
• Senior keeper Colin Finnegan is ranked No. 2 in the country in save percentage, warding off 68.8 percent of the shots on goal.
• Navy has limited 24 of its last 54 opponents to five or fewer goals, and only six foes (Ohio State 2004, Army 2004, Syracuse 2004, Georgetown 2005, Virginia 2005 and Army 2006) have managed to reach double figures.
• Since 2004, Navy has held 28 of its 54 opponents to 25 or fewer shots ... during that time frame, Navy is 26-2 (Ohio State 2004, Colgate 2006) when holding its foes to under 25 shots.
• Navy has lost just six games when holding foes to nine or fewer goals since 2004, posting a 38-6 mark ... two of the losses came in overtime during the 2005 campaign (Bucknell and Johns Hopkins), and the losses in '06 were to Colgate, Georgetown (twice) and Johns Hopkins.

A Look Back at the Canisius Win
• Ian Dingman, Billy Looney and Bruce Nechanicky each produced a hat trick to lead fifth-ranked Navy to a 13-5 victory over Canisius (0-3) Tuesday morning at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
• While Dingman, Looney and Nechanicky paced the Mids with three goals apiece, junior attack Nick Mirabito pitched in a pair of goals and assists, while newcomer Basil Daratsos and junior Matt Guido scored once.
• Canisius looked to take the early lead in the game when attack Michael Blocho wrapped around the left side of the goal and sent a shot past Navy keeper Colin Finnegan ... the goal, however, was waived off after the official's checked Blocho's stick and ruled it illegal, sending him to the sideline to serve a three-minute unreleasable penalty.
• Navy finally got on the scoreboard at the 6:37 mark in the first quarter when Dingman curled around the left side of the cage and stuck in the game's first goal ... the Navy lead, however, would be short-lived, as Ross answered for Canisius 33 seconds later, as he, too, came around the left side of the goal to sneak in a shot.
• The Golden Griffins took their only lead of the contest at 2-1 when Brad Favero sent a bouncer from 10 yards out on the right side into the net with four minutes to go.
• The Mids took a 4-3 lead going into the half as Mirabito scored in transition off an assist from junior middie Terence Higgins ... that score would be the first of six unanswered goals for the Midshipmen, as they led Canisius 9-3 with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter.
• Navy went on to give up one goal in each of the final two quarters to seal the victory.

It wasn't entirely obvious who Navy would turn to when savvy attackman Jon Birsner graduated after last season.

After several stops and shifts since leaving high school, Bruce Nechanicky is doing a fine job of providing an answer.

Nechanicky has six goals and five assists this season as the No. 4 Midshipmen have jumped to their second straight 5-0 start....

Navy Men's Lacrosse Team Improves To 6-0

DALLAS, Texas—Junior Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored three goals and assisted on two others to lead the fifth ranked Navy Midshipmen (6-0, 3-0 in the Patriot League) to an easy 12-2 Patriot League victory over Holy Cross (2-5, 0-4) in front of a terrific crowd of 4,482 fans at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the campus of Southern Methodist University. The game was the first Division I lacrosse game played in the Dallas Metroplex area.

“I’m thankful and appreciative to the Dallas and SMU communities for making this a great event,” said Navy head coach Richie Meade. “We are used to playing in front of a great home crowd and I thought the crowd today was tremendous.”

Mirabito, who has scored a goal or handed out an assist in each of the 37 games he’s appeared in, scored an unassisted goal in the first period, scored off an assist from Terence Higgins (Jr./Chappaqua, N.Y.) in the second, scored off an assist from Billy Looney (Sr./Silver Spring, Md.) in the third and then assisted on back-to-back goals by Ian Dingman (Sr./Deferiet, N.Y.) to end the third period. It’s the third time this season that Mirabito has recorded a hat trick and it’s the ninth hat trick by a Navy player this year.

The Mids defense was sensational all day, shutting out the Crusaders until late in the fourth period. Senior goalie Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.) came up with nine saves and did not allow a goal before leaving the contest with 3:46 left.

“I was really proud of our defensive effort today,” said Meade. “We didn’t make many mistakes. I thought the Holy Cross goalie played pretty well and kept them in the game early on.”

The Navy offense also got goals from Higgins in the first, Basil Daratsos (Fr./Niskayuna, N.Y.) and Matt Guido (Jr./North Caldwell, N.J.), off an assist from Dingman, in the second, Greg Clement (Jr./Dallas, Texas), who was returning to his hometown, scored two fourth quarter goals, Joe McAuliffe (Fr./Vero Beach, Fla.) scored his first-career goal off the first-career assist from Dan Vassar (Jr./Littleton, Colo.) in the fourth and Andy Tormey (So./Syracuse, N.Y.) scored his first-career goal on a man down situation to round out the scoring.

Navy, 6-0 for the first time since 1989, will play host to Colgate in a key Patriot League contest on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
