Colorado College vs. IU vs. Lawrence vs. U Rochester

Plans: No real career plans right now, as for major, I will likely double major English and something else. I like history (particularly Middle Eastern and modern European) and linguistics, and might minor in math. Money isn't an overly big concern, so I didn't but exact figures in, but it would be roughly the same cost at CC and U of R, considerably lower for Lawrence, and nothing at IU.

Colorado College:

PRO: Block plan, the Rockies, rapidly developing Middle Eastern studies, small, already enough credits to have a year under my belt.
CON: No linguistics, no merit offer, worried about drug culture (didn't seem bad when I visited, but I've heard stories.), pretty homogeneous student body.

IU (Hutton Honors):

PRO: Honors college, strong departments well - all around, full ride, close to home,
CON: Big, ridiculously big, might want to get farther from home, core curriculum.

Lawrence:

PRO: Linguistics, strong English, lots of merit aid, great campus feel, small, fairly avant-garde (without being over-the-top or having a high percentage of hipsters), weather, quarter system, diverse student body.
CON: Possibly too small, worried about limited opportunities (low endowment comparatively), high percentage of music majors = limited peer group?

U Rochester:

PRO: Strong English department (modernist offerings), weather (I love the cold), reasonable size, beautiful campus, really friendly student body, Rochester Plan.
CON: Rochester itself, not much school spirit, might be too science-oriented.

Colorado College does not have a linguistics department (many small colleges don’t) but does offer a few courses in the anthropology department. They offer linguistics as a “thematic minor”. As for the drug culture, at CC and elsewhere you can always request a substance-free dorm.
