Hi, I'm a student really interested in Colubmia University. I was discouraged from applying to this school after I received my SAT score- 1970. I have a decent resume like everyone else: top four in class (over 400 kids), extracurriculars (sports, music, volunteer, all of that good stuff:), leaderships/awards.

I'm going to take the SAT I again in October and SAT IIs in November, but because I'm Asian, I feel like I can't get into anywhere I want to go to, unless I bump up my SAT by like 200-300 points. So, is there anyone who got into Columbia this year??

Also, it is possible to take the SAT II in November and still apply early, right?
Thanks!

Try the ACT. For many people, the SAT just isn't their kind of test.

I scored a 2050 on the March SAT after preparing for a month.
I scored a 33 on the April ACT with little prep (comparable to a 2150-2190).

I would go to the library and check out the official ACT test prep book. Do a practice test and see how you do; you may surprise yourself.

ya...you must retake SAT or take ACT, cause regardless of your race, anything below 2000 will not get you into columbia, unless you are a D1 athelete. Being azn just makes it even harder.

dont let the idea of being asian hurt u in applying. i cant see why colleges count against that when most students at top colleges or universities are white (no offense) and they say nothing about that. just try hard, retake the SAT with confidence, try the ACT, rub the idea that being asian will hurt u, have some safety colleges, and believe in yourself.

One of my best friends (asian) got into columbia this year with a 2010 SAT, terrific SAT subject tests (750-800's), 3.9 unweighted 4.1 weighted, ranked top 5 students out of 400, and a heavy interest in physics/sciences as well as decent EC's. So it's definitely possible to have them overlook your not-as-great SAT to admit you. Still, if you can bump your SAT score up a little to 2000+ or take the ACT, that might increase your chances substantially. Definitely don't get discouraged!

i mean, there are always a few bad SAT stories, but I'm guessing you probably want a solid chance at Columbia, not a "hope to god" chance...so I would highly suggest retaking the SAT

^cgar has a good point

SAT/ACT is definitely very important at schools that have huge applicant pools (high school GPA can be subjective and difficult to understand the significance of, given many high schools weight differently).

Retake it or take the ACT. Unless you have outstanding extracurriculars, I don't think you would have a solid chance without a better standardized test grade.

thanks everyone for the advice...yup i'm taking the SAT again in october after i do much studying over the summer:)
