Columbia Arts Scene

Simple question:Can someone please give me a summary of the arts scene at Columbia? Are students heavily involved/interested in the arts or do they tend to be more "industrialized"?How does the NYC location affect cultural involvement?

Thanks very much in advance :)

I love when people here self-proclaim their questions to be “simple” when they’re convoluted questions, call for posters to write them summaries, and use amorphous and ambiguous terminology. what the heck is “the arts scene”? Are you some hipster in your use of “industrialized”?

Yes I do suppose the term “industrialized” was not exactly what I should have used.

Basically, I’d like to know if students often take up extra-curriculars related at theatre, music etc or if there are many university sponsored events that have to do with the arts. Generally, the fact that the so called “arts” are appreciated at Yale is agreed on.Does the same stand true for Columbia?

I’m also concerned with the “art scene”, but mostly, are people generally encouraged to participate in arts even though they are just amateurs, or even not experienced at all?
(I love cinema and theater, plan to do a major/concentration in film studies, but don’t know if I’ll be with a group of semi-experts, or mostly film lovers, like me)

i have no idea what you mean but there is an active act scene and a totally artsy hipster crew. After all, it is New york and you will get that vibe. CU Arts provides grants to students in art, there are a lot of events in dodge. A lot of ECs relating to art. On a minor note, i don’t know about the other palces, but there’s a lot of drugs invovled here. I have never seen than much coke consumed in such a short time period.

im not sure of extracurriculars directly associated with Columbia, but YOURE IN NEW YORK CITY. ARTS ARE EVERYWHERE. nothing to worry about! there are plenty of opportunities to engage in the arts, even though they may not be directly associated with Columbia.

I live in NYC, so I can definitely attest to this.

There are museums everywhere! Museum of the Moving Image, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum… as well as performance centers, and all these other smaller things too. By smaller things I mean things like watching undiscovered bands perform. I don’t think any city can compete with NY. definitely not any american cities.

in fact they even try to promote art in subway stations and on the actual subways themselves. there are mosaics and murals everywhere.

hope this helps  trust me, you have nothing to worry about.
