Columbia Class of 2020 ED Applicant Thread

I wrote about the core and how i loved columbia’s interdisciplinary combination of teaching without ever saying the word “core” to avoid sounding like every other why columbia essay is that really bad?

@dr0wning hmm I mentioned NYC and diversity but wrapped in with the core (idk if that makes sense haha but I mainly focused on core, but mentioned how core encourages diversity and that being in NYC helps with the core being important) and I think if you click on my profile you can click message

I’ve talked to some friends who work in admissions and from what I’ve heard, they generally just look to see that you’ve done your research and know specific things that appeal to you. I think talking about the core is fine as long as your entire essay wasn’t just focused on the core

Guys, c’mon we did our best. It’s 100% out of our hands now. Let’s not discuss the essays.

I talked about the core and the motto of the school, and how unselfish and altruistic it is comparing to other schools’, which focus more on self-evaluation and whatnot. “In your light we shall see light”, it just makes me wanna help people.

@soph1112 I figure that at any Ivy, really no one is the smart kid anymore. But being around intellectual minds of such high caliber is a beneficial experience. Sure, it’s nice to be the smartest, but I wouldn’t want to be around stupid people all the time. Also, unless you’re really exceptional, you (and I) would be small fish in a big pond. Arguably, it’s better to be a big fish in a small pond. There was a section on it in Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath, and I think the big fish in small ponds published more papers. ofc, that measure of “success” is subjective, but something to keep in mind!
@TrazCapDEV I don’t know what to think of that because my GPA is lower but my SAT is higher…

I totally agree with @alpha525 Let’s just decompress and think about something else until Thursday lol

@soph1112 lol same when I wrote them I was like “yeah these are good ok great amazing accepted maybe hah” and now I’m looking back like what are thosseee

In all honesty, if you’re on this forum, it means you give a cr*p about what happens and that you’re probably extremely qualified.

@TrazCapDEV 2deep4me lmao I never thought of the motto, but my friend apparently managed to work the motto into each essay, talking about how it really resonated with him, etc etc.
@graceann I PM’d you!

Yeah, there’s really no purpose, personally I’m curious, not anxious.

@alpha525 LOL, tell that to Brown. Their Why Brown supplement has a 100 word limit.

@cl938803 So admissions value specifics and details of what you see in the school even if they’re cliche?

Anyone here watch any sports?

Go Warriors?

Don’t say you watch Columbia Football cause I know you don’t. :))

@ThePedestrian I remember reading an article a while ago about UChicago admissions officers debating over a girl’s app. Someone said that she expressed a sentiment contrary to UChicago’s mission statement/general vibe and that was a strike against her. However, someone said that it was a good sign that she didn’t attempt to pander to admissions officers by being exactly like UChicago, it showed that she had her own opinions and could think for herself. (Sorry about how vague this is, I read it a while ago and will try to dig it up!) The point is, cliche shows that you fit (for lack of a better word), but un-cliche shows that you march to your own beat, I guess. The issue is being un-cliche while communicating your interest and “fit”.

@dr0wning I thought marching to your own beat was UChicago’s mission statement.

@alpha525 (I read this article at least a year ago) Basically, it is. In the article the girl had an un-cliche viewpoint and the UChicago admissions officers viewed her refusal to pander to them as marching to her own beat.

Are you guys going to look at the decision for yourself or with people (like parents)? I’m conflicted

@soph1112 I would do it myself. It’s my application.
