Columbia Class of 2020 ED Applicant Thread

@columbhiroller Agree. I think we’re all so anxious, every little thing is making us worry. What majors did you list as interests on the app?

@dr0wning I have a relatively low gpa, about a 3.7 so I wouldn’t be too concerned. It is a holistic process and they look at the whole person. :slight_smile:

By myself. I wouldn’t want to be around other people in the (likely) scenario that I’m deferred/rejected.
@aniiii econ, sociology, and psych! though by now I’d probably change it to econ, IR, and philosophy. what about you?

@aniiii As I am interested in journalism, I intend to double-major in Urban Studies and Human Rights. I think my third interest listed was English Lit. And you?

@michigangirl2016 What i wanted to know was whether a GPA like 3.7 was considered low, so thanks for answering! Good luck to us low-GPA students :wink:

I’m doing a double major (I think): Political Science (concentration on IR) and French.

I actually didn’t even write about the core at all. I obviously referred to their amazing credentials but I wanted to avoid the common topics like the core and nyc. I wrote about New York and Columbia especially being an important place for fighting for diversity, equality, and social justice which is something I said I wanted to bring to the campus bc I’m passionate about it. also said I liked how students were passionate about the same thing and I wanted to meet people like that. idk I just hope it stands out

However, I am very tempted to change my major to Astronomy or Astrophysics. I’m very scared about finding a stable career (even if this is so many years away) that a STEM degree is tempting. I don’t really know.

I’m trying not to worry about it too much because we have lots of time to figure this stuff out. :slight_smile:

@alpha525 no, there are separate admissions officers.

Lol, majors

@michigangirl2016 Yeah, I said that.

Is anyone else not only scared of getting rejected, but scared of getting admitted as well?

I live 2500 miles from NYC and do not know a single person there. I’m scared of leaving my family, especially my little sister and all my friends as well. Thus, I’m scared to get accepted as well.

However, I know that I will never really “feel ready” but so I need to just do it. I’m just working on trying to “roll with the punches” and “go with the flow” lol

@columbhiroller I put down urban studies too (along with Earth science)!

Biomedical Engineering anyone?
@969028 I didn’t write about the core at all either. I talked a lot about what I saw when I went for a tour, things like the diversity and passion that I saw on campus. Mine also started off talking about food… so we’ll have to see how that goes lol

@soph1112 what state do you live in? I think that getting accepted is a lot less of a problem than getting rejected. Anyway, there will be a lot of opportunities to meet new people! You’ll make friends there even if you don’t know anyone yet.

I live an hour away from NYC. I feel like thats a disadvantage in admissions.

@soph1112 don’t be! Once you are there you will get used to being away from home, though I totally understand that feeling. 2500 miles really isn’t a huge deal if you’ve ever been on a transpacific flight (I still dread it after flying transpacific about five times a year for six years…)

@krz1498 I’m thinking biomedical engineering!

Supposedly it’s a disadvantage if you live near the school since there will be a lot of applicants from within the state and they want geographical diversity. If it gets any consideration, it’ll be minimal, I think.

@aspenz I live in Arizona. I live sort of near Phoenix but in a small farming town called Buckeye. Thus, there is a world of difference between my town and Manhattan lol. I think that worries me a bit
