Columbia Class of 2020 ED Applicant Thread

Columbia is one of my first choices! I’m from Hawaii and I’m planning to apply RD. Intended major is business (management and investment banking)!

Does anyone know if you can take classes at both CC and SEAS? Or is that only through the combined plan?

If you’re in SEAS, then you can take most of the CC classes. But even if you can take them, they would probably not fill your degree requirements. So realistically the only people who do this are engineers applying to Med school, taking their premed requirements.

If you’re in CC, then you cannot take SEAS classes. And really, I can’t imagine why anyone would wish to do such a thing.

one of my friends got into columbia w/ under 1800 on sat I, below 25 in ranking (noncompetitie school), but he was a URM and his brother goes to columbia; his essays were fantastic but idk how that accounts for such poor academic performance

@pearmetty I will really like to know that is possible since I am also a URM.
Or maybe his brother has than something great at Columbia they think he can replicate or exceed.

@samuelfrimps yes it is entirely possible; this year my school sent bout 6/800 kids to Ivies ( a lot more than usual) and i have absolutely no idea how they got in besides that their essays were fantastic

@pearmetty That might also be a factor. I recommend you read Why you get rejected by Anthony Green. It is a great book about the admission process and has great in depth analysis of the admission process.

@samuelfrimps thank you so much i will try to find at barnes and noble definitely. from what i know, all i can say is that i stress the importance of the essay immensely as many of the applicants have great scores and Ec’s so there needs to be a differentiation factor

CommonApp 2016 is open!

Best of luck to all of you!!!

Looking to apply to Columbia as well.

Love common core, brilliant blue, and Eric Kandel! Hoping to do premed and neuroscience with a creative writing minor.

Is this thread still active?
Since we are now getting closer to the date, I feel like it would be good to discuss

I agree, @Ashlyvez! It seems that many fellow 2020s haven’t been active on the forums yet.

I want to apply to Columbia Early Decision this fall but my score is a 1610. I’ve been studying since July and my scores have stayed in the same range. My test is on October 3rd. Any advice to cram in for the last month?

I feel like my essay’s content is strong and my extracurriculars really show my leadership so I really need help on tips of getting in.

I come from an inner city where they encourage use to go to community college so I do not know where else to turn to other than the few teachers that have tried to help me.

Hey @Ashlyvez can u take remedial math and English classes between now an Oct 3? Why r they encouraging u to go to community college? r ur grades strong? Otherwise, I’d better wait for RD round.

I have a math teacher tutoring me everyday for this month so I’m going to see what happens and I’ve been using the direct hits book now along with the blue book.

I have a 4.1 gpa and I’m #1 in my class

They push us to go to community college because our school does not get accepted to good schools. They have never had a student get accepted into an Ivy League.

@columbiaman. Most classes at CC are open to SEAS students and vice versa. There are also duplicates. Columbia probably has one of the most comprehensive course selections in the nation.

Is it possible to get into Columbia ED with a 3.63 gpa? My gpa’s really low only because my freshmen year. I’m currently taking 5 APs this year and have avg SAT/ACT scores, but strong ECs

@gxssipgirl I’m in a similar situation as you except my 3.6 gpa is due to struggling with depression/anxiety as well as the loss of two of my grandparents so it was more end of sophomore year and part of junior year that is bringing me down. my scores are strong though (35 ACT) and I have strong ECs though so fingers crossed for both of us ED applicants!
